Mr. Viet confided: The recent historic flood has swept away all his family's assets, 2 cages were buried and swept away, the remaining cages were also destroyed by the flood, unable to be reused. According to Mr. Viet, from his grandfather, father, to him, the livelihood came from catching shrimp and fish, raising fish in cages, so despite the loss, he still had to try to rebuild. Mr. Viet mainly raises specialty fish such as catfish, brine shrimp, kumquat, and lang, which take a long time to raise. In the current situation, he will intercrop with other common fish such as grass carp, bighead carp, and tilapia to ensure his livelihood.

Although they lost both the net and the net, the members of Yen Nguyen Fisheries Cooperative (Chiem Hoa) did not lose their spirit and abandon the fish cage farming on Lo River, which has become a brand not only of Yen Nguyen but also of Chiem Hoa district. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thiet, Director of the Cooperative, the Cooperative is lifting the cages ashore, those that can be used will be reinforced for reuse, and the damaged cages will be liquidated to build new ones. According to Mr. Thiet, the flood has destroyed the entire cage system, so to ensure fish farming can be resumed, the entire cage system must be invested in and completely rebuilt. Although it is costly, the fish cage farming has been ingrained in the blood of generations of Hop Long people in Yen Nguyen, so no matter what, people are determined to keep the profession. Mr. Thiet also hopes that the province, district, and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will have policies to support capital and breeds so that cage fish farmers who suffered losses due to natural disasters can quickly restart their businesses.
According to the report of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries, the flood after the circulation of storm No. 3 damaged 499 hectares of fish farming area and 527 fish cages, mainly specialty fish such as: sturgeon, catfish, bong, lang nha, lang den... Chiem Hoa is the most severely damaged district with 370 cages. In the immediate future, some households have begun to regenerate, gradually restore their jobs, however, on a small scale compared to large-scale farming households, to restore production, not only depends on the will and efforts of the subject, but also needs support from the government, functional sectors and credit institutions. Mr. Trinh Van Ha, group 7, Na Hang town (Na Hang) said: The flood on September 10 and 11 swept away the entire system of cages and equipment for production, estimated at about 1.4 billion VND. To restore at this time is extremely difficult for the family. Mr. Ha really wants to receive support and companionship from the district, the Department of Agriculture, and the bank to help him restart his business.
Sharing difficulties with cage fish farmers
To quickly overcome the consequences of storm No. 3 and post-storm floods, restore and develop agricultural, forestry and fishery production, ensure food supply, contribute to controlling inflation, and stabilize people's lives, the Provincial People's Committee issued Document No. 4903/UBND-KT dated October 23, 2024 on promoting the recovery of agricultural production after storm No. 3 in the province.
Comrade Nguyen Dai Thanh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: The Department has coordinated with districts and cities to inspect, review, and make a list of damaged localities to propose support policies. Particularly for the aquaculture industry, to ensure stable livestock farming, the Department requires localities to organize the collection and treatment of waste, waste, and dead aquatic products according to regulations; ensure that environmental pollution does not cause disease outbreaks in aquaculture areas affected by the storm. The Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Aquatic Products is responsible for guiding aquaculture facilities to repair and restore cage and raft systems, paying attention to using new, environmentally friendly materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions and river environments. Particularly for the source of fish seeds, the Department has assigned the Aquatic Products Center to provide enough fish seeds to meet people's needs for herd restoration after storm No. 3.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Nghia, Deputy Director of the Provincial Aquaculture Center, affirmed: The Center is committed to providing all types of fish breeds from specialty to common to serve the market's needs, the prices of the breeds remain the same, without fluctuations. In case of high market demand, the Center will connect with Aquaculture Centers nationwide to provide quality breeds to help people rebuild their herds. Mr. Nguyen Quang Nghia also recommended that fish farmers take advantage of the high temperature to release fish early, avoiding the case of releasing fish at the end of the year when the temperature drops, affecting the resistance of the young fish.
According to information from the banking system, banks are also following the direction of the State Bank to postpone, extend debt, reduce interest rates and make new loans so that businesses and people can have new capital to rotate. Old debts will be considered and resolved appropriately to create the best conditions for customers, including the aquaculture sector to rebuild and restore production.
Hopefully, with the province's strong direction, support from specialized sectors, and the efforts and overcoming difficulties of organizations and households engaged in cage fish farming, the fish farming industry will soon recover.
