"Three years ago, when I was a high school student, I earned my first money thanks to an iPhone 6," said Tran Thi Tra My (20 years old, in Kim Boi, Hoa Binh ).

Besides studying at university, Tra My spends time doing part-time work as a photophone (taking pictures with a phone).

Tra My has been interested in taking photos with her phone since high school.

Since having a mobile phone, every image that this Gen Z girl posts on social media is carefully selected and edited to make the picture look perfect. Her passion for photography has grown since high school and is still pursued by Tra My today.

In the first years of her work, the girl herself did not know the concept of photophone. Tra My simply took photos, advised on outfit combinations, and did makeup for her friends.

The girl said that at the end of 2021, when she left her hometown to go to Hanoi to study at university, she officially entered the path of more professional photography. Although she has not undergone any formal training course in photography, Tra My has constantly improved her knowledge and learned from her seniors. At this point, this young person also has her own plan to improve her skills in this field.

While her friends choose to work at coffee shops, the salary is only 22,000-25,000 VND/hour, working as a photophone like Tra My, the income is about 100,000 VND/hour, 170,000-300,000 VND/session. After a while working, she has a "file" of regular customers.

Although it is just a part-time job, this job can easily bring in an income of 4-5 million VND/month. So, while studying at university and working, Tra My does not have to depend on her parents for monthly living expenses.

From the outside, this may seem like a "free" job, getting to travel and do the work you love, but the photophone profession also has many funny and sad stories.

"There were days when we took photos outdoors for too long, the phone would warn us so the model and I would temporarily stop taking photos," Tra My shared.

Becoming a photographer, Tra My can pursue her passion for photography.

Until now, Tra My still cannot forget the time she had to travel from Thanh Xuan district to Gia Lam twice to take make-up photos for a customer. Because the clothing store's model did not allow the photographer to adjust her pose, the shop owner was not satisfied, forcing Tra My to arrange another photo shoot.

Or once, Tra My "lost her mind" and accidentally deleted a photo before sending it to a customer. The photographer could only cry. These obstacles also help this young person gain more experience and strengthen her passion for photography to improve every day.

No time constraints

Graduated from university with a major in tourism management, Nguyen Thu Huong (23 years old, from Tu Son, Bac Ninh) was destined for photography. With a pretty appearance, Huong has been a photo model since she was a student.

The girl shared: "In 2021, I posted on a photo modeling group using photos I had taken. I didn't expect many people to order me to be a photophone, not a photo model."

Initially, she only joined the group, helping to take photos of models and clothing products, but the photos taken by Thu Huong's mobile phone were very eye-catching and attractive. Highly appreciated by everyone, Thu Huong changed her direction to become a freelance photophone (a person who takes photos freely with a phone).

Recalling the first "money-making" photo shoot, Thu Huong said it was in October 2022 to promote clothing products for a fashion store. The shooting space was in a coffee shop in Hanoi, after 3 hours of taking photos with her phone, Thu Huong received a salary of nearly 1 million VND.

Initially using iPhone 11, after 3 months in the profession, the girl saved enough money to upgrade to iPhone 12 Pro Max. Up to now, the number of customers is quite stable. The price per hour ranges from 200,000-250,000 VND. It is estimated that Thu Huong also has an income of 8-10 million VND per month.

The reason for sticking with this job, Thu Huong said: "The job is free in terms of time, not constrained. Each customer gives me a different photo shoot location, so I can learn more new destinations. Especially, I can pursue my hobby of taking photos."

The target customer segment of photophone is small businesses and shops, reducing the cost of promoting products. Thu Huong has explained to customers many times the characteristics of taking photos with phones, but they asked to take photos and capture moments as quickly as professional cameras.

According to Thu Huong, this job will develop in the future. However, to be stable, this young person gradually aims to work for a unit, instead of accepting freelance clients like now.
