On the occasion of the whole country joyfully celebrating the Traditional Day of Vietnamese Theatre (Death Anniversary of the Theatre Industry), Meritorious Artist Kieu My Dung and painter - musician Tran Thien (Tay Do Theatre) went to Hanoi to visit their respected teacher - People's Artist Nguyen Ngoc Phuong.

For Ms. Kieu My Dung, this trip was a precious reunion and they preserved a sacred moment expressing the morality of "remembering the source of the water you drink" - a beautiful tradition of artists.

Kieu My Dung - "Without you, there is no me"

The moment when People's Artist Nguyen Ngoc Phuong gently asked: "Is it hot out here?" moved both husband and wife to tears. Despite his old age and poor health, the teacher was always attentive and close to his students - those whom he had taught and guided through each play and each stage lesson. "Anyone who visited him was moved, because his feelings for his students were very sincere and warm" - shared artist Tran Thien.

Director Nguyen Ngoc Phuong was awarded the title of People's Artist by the state in 1990. After graduating from the directing department at the Lunachaxki Soviet State Theatre Academy, he returned to Vietnam and began staging many works and training human resources for the national stage.

He has staged many plays: "Rainy Night", "Anh Troi", "Fireworks", "The Soldier", "The Bourgeois Learn to Be Noble", "The Road and Youth"...

In early 1967, he staged the play "De Tham", which was a success with over 1,000 performances and received much love from the audience.

In 1970, the play won the Gold Medal at the National Professional Theatre Festival. He was appointed as the director and artistic director of the Central Northern Tuong Troupe. In August 1981, he brought Vietnamese Tuong art to Germany, Bulgaria and the Soviet Union to perform and achieved great success. He was also the first person to bring Tuong art to the world .

"He was sent to study in the former Soviet Union, trained at the Lunachaxki National Academy of Dramatic Arts (theatre management department). After that, he transferred to the directing major. In 1963, he graduated, then returned to the country to work and train the younger generation" - Meritorious Artist Kieu My Dung said.

Can Tho's mark at the National Exhibition

The two artists' trip to Hanoi also coincided with the Capital solemnly organizing the National Achievement Exhibition "80 Years of Journey of Independence - Freedom - Happiness" at the National Exhibition Center (Dong Anh). In the space "Bright Can Tho - New position, new vision", Meritorious Artist Kieu My Dung performed traditional music for tens of thousands of visitors every day. The space of Can Tho City is impressively arranged in the "Rich province, strong country" area, with a welcome gate simulating Can Tho Ancient Market - a long-standing symbol of cultural trade.

Here, Meritorious Artist Kieu My Dung performed the vọng cổ song "Kiep cam ca" (composer Vien Chau), leaving many beautiful emotions for visitors.

Tran Thien, a support for the young generation

When mentioning Tay Do Theater, we cannot help but mention the great contribution of painter - musician Tran Thien. He came to the stage in 1976 thanks to the passion for painting of a young man from An Hoa (Ninh Kieu). An unexpected meeting with painter The Nhan brought him to Hau Giang 1 Opera Troupe to paint scenery and from then on, he devoted his life to the stage.

In addition to painting, he is also an enthusiastic musician, associated with the Hau Giang 1 and Tay Do bands, inspiring many generations of young artists. He has held many important positions: Deputy Head of the troupe (1982), Head of the troupe (2010), Deputy Director of Tay Do Theater (2013–2016).

When receiving the gift of gratitude from the program "Mai Vang Tri An" of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper and Nam A Bank, they were moved to say that they will continue to be a support for the younger generation to follow, preserving the identity of the Western theater so as not to disappoint the audience.

Not only staging quality plays, Meritorious Artist Kieu My Dung also actively participates in the School Stage program in Can Tho City, teaching more than 100 secondary school students historical excerpts of reformed opera, nurturing the love of national culture for the young generation.

She is currently the Vice President of the Can Tho City Theater Association and a lecturer at the Can Tho City College of Culture and Arts. She was a student of the K26 directing class (2006) of People's Artist Nguyen Ngoc Phuong - a special course coordinated between Hanoi and Can Tho.
