US President-elect Donald Trump is serious when he says he wants to take Greenland, both to expand US influence in the Western Hemisphere and to build a legacy after his term, Reuters reported today, January 9, citing three informed sources.
President-elect Donald Trump's plane landed at Greenland airport on January 7 during his eldest son's visit.
Donald Trump recently said that after returning to the White House, he will not rule out economic or military measures to regain control of Greenland, an overseas territory of Denmark.
Regarding the above statement, Reuters quoted a source familiar with internal discussions with Trump as saying that the probability of the president-elect using force to take back Greenland is unlikely.
Mr Trump, however, is serious about using other tools, such as diplomatic or economic pressure on Denmark.
“The real legacy is that you expand American territory,” the source said, adding that the US has not done this in 70 years.
In 1959, two US territories, Alaska and Hawaii, became the 49th and 50th states under Republican President Dwight Eisenhower. "He (Trump) always talked about it a lot," the source said.
Another source recalled seeing a list of foreign policy priorities compiled by senior Trump officials after his victory on November 5, 2024. One line immediately caught the eye: “Buy Greenland.”
The president-elect sees the possibility of acquiring Greenland as a matter of national security.
Danish officials have commented on Mr. Trump's above goal many times, according to which the country has no intention of selling Greenland.
At the same time, Mr. Trump also said that Canada should become the 51st state of this country.
Asked on January 9 to comment on Mr. Trump’s remarks about Greenland and Canada, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Arctic is within Russia’s national strategic interests, and Moscow is closely following developments there.
