Data from the European Statistical Office showed that the Eurozone CPI rose 2.2% year-on-year, the first time in five months that it has exceeded the 2% target. The increase was mainly due to a slight increase in service prices, but core inflation remained unchanged at 2.3%, in line with experts' forecasts. These data continue to reinforce the possibility that the ECB will continue to keep its key interest rate unchanged in the latter part of this year, despite signs of slowing in the manufacturing sector in recent months.

ECB President Christine Lagarde said that with its policy rate currently at 2%, the ECB is well placed to respond if inflation risks change or if new shocks threaten its target. However, some policymakers may cite the September 2025 figures as a reason to resist further easing, and the ECB is almost certain to keep rates unchanged at its third consecutive meeting on 30 October.

Financial investors see just a 10% chance of another rate cut later this year and a 30% chance of a rate cut by mid-2026.

On the regional economic front, manufacturing activity fell again in September 2025, as new orders fell at the fastest pace in six months, signaling a fragile recovery in the sector.

The monthly S&P Global/Hamburg Bank (HCOB) Eurozone manufacturing purchasing managers' index fell to 49.8 in September 2025 from 50.7 in August 2025, hitting the 50-point threshold indicating growth for the first time since mid-2022.

Eurozone output increased slightly month-on-month for the seventh consecutive month, but progress remains slow, according to HCOB chief economist Cyrus de la Rubia.

However, new orders fell in September 2025, after rising in August 2025, mainly due to the impact from export markets. The fall in new orders, although slight, was the sharpest since March 2025.
