After nearly 2 hours of surgery, the medical team at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital successfully removed a foreign object, a 9 cm long broken chopstick, from the patient's eye socket.
On November 1, Dr. Nguyen Trieu Viet, Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, said that the hospital's doctors had just successfully treated a very complicated case of a foreign object. The foreign object was a piece of chopstick that had penetrated and remained in the patient's eye socket and maxillary sinus for 2 weeks.
Previously, patient NTT (24 years old) came to the hospital with swelling in the left corner of the eye and pus discharge from the left nostril. According to the patient, 2 weeks after being admitted to the hospital, he was stabbed in the corner of his eye after drinking with a friend. After that, the patient had symptoms of swelling in the corner of his eye and went for treatment but there was no improvement.
The foreign body was a broken piece of chopsticks that had been in the patient's eye socket for 2 weeks.
Through examination, endoscopy and CT scan, doctors determined that the foreign object was very complex, about 9 cm long, penetrating the orbital ethmoidal and lateral nasal septum, and the foreign object was stuck in the nasal ethmoidal. From the endoscopic image, it was shown that the foreign object was very dangerous. If not detected and intervened promptly, the patient could have an infection that would affect vision.
CT scan image shows a complex foreign body about 9 cm long penetrating the orbital cribriform plate and lateral nasal wall, the foreign body is stuck in the patient's nasal cribriform plate.
After consultation, the doctors decided to perform endoscopic surgery combined with open surgery to remove the foreign object and clean the foreign object fragments, sealing the hole in the orbital ethmoidal cavity.
After nearly 2 hours of surgery, the surgical team successfully removed the foreign object, a 9cm long broken chopstick, and removed bone fragments and fragments of the foreign object; flushed the infected sinus area and sealed the perforated area of the orbital ethmoidal plate. After the intervention, the patient was awake, had normal eye movement and vision.
After 2 hours of surgery, the medical team successfully removed the foreign object.
Dr. Nguyen Trieu Viet recommends that patients with injuries caused by foreign objects penetrating the body, regardless of location, need to be treated early to avoid complications such as infection, widespread abscesses affecting function and aesthetics. In particular, for injuries caused by foreign objects penetrating the eye area and paranasal sinuses, they need to be taken to a medical facility for early treatment to avoid serious complications...
