Banh Chung - Banh Giay Festival in Sam Son City 2023

On the morning of June 29 (May 12, Quy Mao year), Sam Son City organized the 2023 Banh Chung - Banh Giay festival with the participation of representatives of leaders of a number of provincial departments, agencies, and branches, Sam Son City, along with a large number of local people and tourists.

The Banh Chung and Banh Giay Festival (Dao Vu custom) bears a distinct mark of the spiritual culture of Sam Son, a land bearing the mark of coastal culture, and at the same time reminds us of the legend of Prince Lang Lieu creating Banh Chung and Banh Giay as offerings to King Hung. The festival enriches the traditional cultural identity of the homeland and the country in general throughout the history of the nation.

Traditionally, this is the Dao Vu Festival, this Great Festival has become the biggest festival of the year in Sam Son, the main offerings are banh chung and banh giay, with the wish to pray for favorable weather, calm seas; pray for national peace, people's safety, good crops, full boats of fish and shrimp; pray for a good and fruitful tourist season. At the same time, the festival also shows the traditional morality of "remembering the source when drinking water", "remembering the person who planted the tree when eating fruit" in the mind of every Vietnamese person.

The festival also harmonizes cultural, religious and spiritual nuances, honoring "The most sacred and supreme God of the Mountain, Tieu Doc Cuoc" - the symbol of coastal residents in general and Sam Son residents in particular; creating a colorful cultural picture, consolidating the foundation for development and solidarity in the community, strengthening the solidarity of compatriots, and awakening the sacred spirit of the mountains and rivers.

The festival started early in the morning with a traditional procession from temples and communal houses in communes and wards. Elderly men, women, young men, women and children in traditional costumes joined the procession along Ho Xuan Huong Street and gathered at Doc Cuoc yard to prepare for the official ceremony.

Besides the solemn, sacred and respectful ceremony, the festival also has many rich and attractive activities such as: mass art program praising the beauty and changes of Sam Son coastal city; the legend of banh chung and banh giay from units of Truong Son ward, Trung Son, Quang Hung commune and Department of Education and Training of Sam Son city.

All cake making steps are done manually by the teams.

Particularly unique and attractive activity that attracts the attention and encouragement of many people and tourists is the rice cake making competition between wards and communes in the town. All stages of making traditional rice cakes are recreated in detail and vividly by the teams, demonstrating the ingenuity, bravery, strength and solidarity of the people of Sam Son in their working life, production, and socio -economic development.

With 3 competitions within the framework of the festival including: decorating the lacquer tray, carrying the palanquin and making rice cake, the organizing committee awarded the first prize to Hoang Minh Tu temple, Truong Son ward.

The Banh Chung and Banh Giay Festivals, along with other festivals, have been taking place in the city, contributing to creating more appeal and attracting tourists to Sam Son.
