PPA Asia Rankings before Vietnam Open 2025
Before the PPA Asia - Vietnam Open 2025 opened on September 4, the PPA Asia rankings updated the scores. Hong Wong Kit with 2,200 points jumped ahead of Trinh Linh Giang.
The Hong Kong tennis player participated in all three first PPA Asia Open tournaments of the system and had high achievements, so he had a pretty good total score. Hong Wong Kit - Jack Wong won the Hong Kong Open and two bronze medals in Malaysia and Fukuoka, so he was 400 points ahead of Trinh Linh Giang.
Linh Giang did not participate in the tournament in Fukuoka due to visa issues, thus losing a significant amount of points. The Vietnamese tennis player currently has 1,800 points after winning the Malaysia Open and finishing second in Hong Kong. Returning to the tournament in her home country, Trinh Linh Giang reached the semi-finals on the morning of September 5.
Trinh Linh Giang convincingly defeated Kenta Miyoshi (Japan) 2-0 (11-5, 11-6). Kenta is ranked 7th on the PPA Asia rankings with 600 points after 3 Open tournaments. He has the same score as Ly Hoang Nam. The former No. 1 tennis player in Vietnam also reached the semi-finals on home soil.
Ly Hoang Nam struggled to beat Nguyen Dac Tien in the quarterfinals with a score of 2-1 (12-10, 2-11, 11-3). Both players came from tennis backgrounds, but the former number 1 of Vietnam was still better than the player known as "number 1 of the North" at crucial moments.
Ly Hoang Nam's opponent in the semi-finals was his younger brother Truong Vinh Hien. But Vinh Hien also needed 3 games to defeat Aditya Ruhela 2-1 (12-10, 9-11, 3-11). Aditya hurt his knee in game 2 but Hien did not easily force the Indian player to declare retirement.
Trinh Linh Giang has the opportunity to regain the number 1 position right in Vietnam.
The focus of the final men's singles quarterfinal was between Phuc Huynh and Jack Wong. The player who had just been crowned No. 1 in PPA Asia caused a big disappointment when he was quickly defeated by the runner-up of Fukuoka Open 2-0 (11-2, 11-5). The key point seemed to be that Jack Wong changed the brand of his racket when he came to Vietnam to compete in the tournament.
The victory brought Phuc Huynh to meet Ly Hoang Nam in the semi-finals on the morning of September 6. This was a fateful meeting between two pickleball players with similar playing styles. Both had tricky cross-angle backhands close to the net to reach the final round of the men's singles match.
So even though Trinh Linh Giang temporarily lost the No. 1 position in PPA Asia, Jack Wong's early exit gave him an advantage. The PPA Asia - Vietnam Open men's singles championship is an internal matter of the Vietnamese tennis players.
Notably, all four of them came from professional tennis and switched to pickleball.
