The decision was made to ensure communication needs in the context of storm No. 3 making landfall in Vietnam, causing major damage to infrastructure and traffic. This circular allows people and businesses an additional month to overcome the consequences of storms and floods, and at the same time prepare for the transition from 2G networks to higher technologies such as 4G or 5G.
According to the original plan, from September 16, 2024, all 2G network services will be discontinued, which makes many people worried because they do not have time to prepare new devices. The extension to October 15, 2024 is an opportunity for old technology users to have time to learn and buy devices that support 4G or 5G at a reasonable price.
Users of 2G Only devices will have one more month to upgrade and switch to using 4G or higher technology phones.
Telecommunications companies have also made careful preparations for the 2G shutdown. However, due to the complicated weather situation, they have proposed to postpone this deadline to avoid affecting communication activities after storm No. 3 caused damage in some northern provinces.
This extension to October 15, 2024, not only helps people feel more secure but also creates conditions for businesses to complete their infrastructure, ensuring the best service when switching to new technology.
The 2G shutdown is part of Vietnam's long-term plan to improve the quality of telecommunications networks, optimize frequency resources and promote the national digital transformation process. However, to ensure that it does not affect user groups that still depend on the 2G network, the transition process is being implemented carefully, with support from competent authorities and telecommunications enterprises.
According to the roadmap of the Ministry of Information and Communications , Vietnam will completely stop 2G services in 2026 and 3G in 2028, to reserve frequency resources for more advanced network technologies. This is a necessary step in the process of modernizing telecommunications infrastructure, ensuring the sustainable development of the digital economy.
