Liverpool have agreed to pay 70 million euros to activate their release clause, ready to bring RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai to Anfield.
If successful, this will be Liverpool's second new contract this summer after getting Alexis Mac Allister for a fee of 40 million euros from Brighton. "Young master" Newcastle has pursued this Eastern European star since the beginning of the summer but had to withdraw his intention due to fear of violating Financial Fair Play Laws.
Dominik Szoboszlai's contract with RB Leipzig still has three years left to run but the included opt-out clause allows him to leave if the interested party activates it before midnight on July 1. Liverpool have tried to negotiate a lower transfer fee with RB Leipzig but have been unsuccessful and the two sides are still negotiating how to pay in instalments.
According to British media, Liverpool and Dominik Szoboszlai have agreed on personal terms and the Hungarian captain will wait for a medical to complete the transfer with the "Reds". The 23-year-old midfielder will become Liverpool's third most expensive player, after Darwin Nunez at 100 million euros and Virgil van Dijk at 87 million euros.
Dominik Szoboszlai was born in Hungary and pursued his career at Liefering before joining RB Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga. He moved to RB Leipzig from the 2021-2022 season, scoring 20 goals in 91 matches, helping the team win the German Cup two years in a row.
The 1.86m tall midfielder, who is captaining the Hungarian national team, has been attracting the attention of many big clubs since EURO 2020, especially after the Eastern European team defeated England 4-0 in the Nations League group stage last June. Dominik Szoboszlai has played 32 matches and scored 7 goals for Hungary.
European football experts believe that Szoboszlai is more than capable of playing in the Premier League thanks to his excellent individual skills and excellent physical foundation. A strong midfielder, Szoboszlai likes to shoot from afar, create chances and score goals, always taking responsibility for moving the team forward. He ranked 10th in terms of the ability to launch shots per game (5.52 times) in the top 5 European national championships. Szoboszlai ranked 6th in the vote for the best player of the Bundesliga in the 2022-2023 season.
Coach Jurgen Klopp is trying to strengthen Liverpool's midfield after a series of key midfielders such as Naby Keita, James Milner, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Fabio Carvalho left. Having successfully recruited Alexis Mac Allister and about to add Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool is confident in pursuing Federico Valverde despite Real Madrid "screaming" the price of this talented young Uruguayan midfielder up to 90 million euros.
