Impersonation of tuition refund

According to Hanoi City Police, the common form is calling or texting to notify of refunds of previously paid tuition fees, then enticing victims to provide personal information or follow instructions to steal bank accounts.

The trick that scammers often use is: Impersonating school staff, education department or bank to call/notify via text message about tuition refund. Next, ask parents to provide personal information, bank account, OTP code or access strange link, scan QR code to receive money. After obtaining the information, the scammer logs into the bank account, makes the money transfer order and quickly appropriates the property.

According to Hanoi City Police, signs of fraud: schools and educational institutions never ask parents to provide bank account information, OTP codes via phone, text messages or strange links. Fraudsters often call from strange numbers, use urging words, create pressure, and even threaten victims to quickly follow instructions. Fake messages often contain unclear links, asking parents to log in to strange websites.

To proactively prevent fraudulent activities of appropriating property with the above tricks, Hanoi City Police advise people to:

Never provide personal information, OTP code, citizen identification number, facial images or videos to anyone via social networks or phone.

Do not scan QR Codes, do not access strange links, do not download applications of unknown origin following instructions from strangers.

When receiving a notice regarding tuition fees, it is necessary to contact the school or educational institution directly to verify the information.

If you detect signs of fraud, please immediately report to the nearest police station for timely support.
