Mark Zuckerberg spends "tons of money" to attract AI talent

(Dan Tri) - Facebook's boss has offered attractive salaries to attract AI talents from rival companies, in order to establish a team to develop super artificial intelligence.

Mark Zuckerberg is directly recruiting leading experts in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) to form a team of about 50 people, led by himself, with the goal of developing a super artificial general intelligence (AGI) system.

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Zuckerberg made attractive offers to attract personnel from OpenAI, including a "bribe" of up to 100 million USD for each signed contract.

“They made huge, attractive offers to people on our team, like signing bonuses of up to $100 million, which was much higher than the salary for many years,” Sam Altman shared in an interview broadcast online.

Previously, The New York Times newspaper quoted sources close to and from within Meta, saying that Mark Zuckerberg is determined to recruit talents in the field of AI with salaries ranging from 7 to 9 figures. The talents targeted by Zuckerberg are working at leading technology companies today such as OpenAI or Google...

However, it seems that the huge salary offered by Mark Zuckerberg is still not enough to attract OpenAI's AI talents.

“I'm really glad that at least so far, none of our best people have accepted Mark Zuckerberg's offer,” Sam Altman added.

Sam Altman believes that Mark Zuckerberg's offering of high salaries to attract AI talent is a mistake, because talented people will work for dedication and passion, instead of just knowing money.

“I think talented people will be driven by motivation, prioritize the mission, and then the financial issues will come to them,” said Sam Altman, while affirming that OpenAI is the company with the conditions to develop a synthetic artificial superintelligence system, after the achievements the company has achieved with ChatGPT.

“There are many things I respect about Meta, but I don’t think they’re a good innovation company. We at OpenAI have built a good culture of continuous innovation,” Sam Altman added.

Not long ago, Meta also spent 15 billion USD to buy 49% of Scale AI's shares. The focus of this deal is not only to own the technology that Scale AI is holding, but also to bring the founder of this company, Alexandr Wang, to work under Mark Zuckerberg.

Although born in 1997, Alexandr Wang is considered a rare talent in the field of AI. Wang studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, majoring in Computer Science , but dropped out after only one year to start his own business.

In 2021, Alexandr Wang became the world's youngest self-made billionaire at the age of 24. Currently, Wang owns an estimated fortune of 3.6 billion USD and is expected to increase further after Meta's acquisition of 49% of Scale AI shares is completed.

What is AGI - Artificial General Intelligence?

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a super-intelligent artificial system that can perform any intellectual task that a human can do. AGI has the ability to learn, reason, and make decisions similar to humans, with a high degree of flexibility and customization.

Unlike narrow artificial intelligence (ANI) systems that specialize in only one specific field, AGI has in-depth data on many different fields and, in particular, has the ability to learn new knowledge and problems without human intervention.

AGI is considered the ultimate goal in the development of AI. However, the birth of AGI also raises many concerns about ethical issues and the risk of artificial intelligence going beyond human control.

In fact, to date, no complete AGI system has been announced. This is the reason why large technology companies invest huge amounts of money, hoping to become the pioneer in successfully building an AGI system.
