Flight JL516 previously took off from New Chitose Airport near Sapporo at 4:27 p.m. local time and landed at 5:47 p.m. (3:47 p.m. Vietnam time), according to FlightRadar24.

Airbus said it had contacted the airline but had no further information at this time.

NHK quoted the Japan Coast Guard as saying that its aircraft at its Haneda base collided with the plane that crashed. NHK added that the collision occurred after the Japan Airlines plane landed on the runway.

NHK added that Haneda Airport was closed after the accident. It is one of the busiest airports in Japan and was packed with people traveling during the New Year holidays.
