A P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft crashed into the sea at a US Marine Corps base in Kaneohe Bay on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

AP news agency quoted Honolulu fire department spokesman Malcolm Medrano as saying that the force received an emergency call about the plane crash at about 2 p.m. on November 20.
The weather in the area was cloudy and rainy at the time, with visibility of only about 1 mile (1.6 km), according to meteorologist Thomas Vaughan of the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

There were nine people on board, but by the time rescuers arrived, all were safely ashore, uninjured. The US Coast Guard also responded, but quickly called off the mission because the people involved had been rescued.

A photo taken by a witness shows the plane floating on the water, a scene reminiscent of the 2009 crash landing of a US Airways commercial plane in the Hudson River in New York City. The event became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson" when pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger made an emergency landing on the river and all 155 people on board survived.
In the Hawaii incident, witness Diane Dircks, 61, a tourist from Illinois, said her family had just canceled a boat trip and returned to the pier due to rain when her daughter spotted the plane crash into the ocean. Then, sirens blared everywhere. Rescue boats rushed to the scene to rescue those on board in what Ms. Dircks described as an "unbelievable" incident.
The P-8A is manufactured by Boeing and shares many parts with the commercial 737. The military version is often used for intelligence gathering, reconnaissance and anti-submarine purposes.
