A video of a mother throwing water at her child to punish him in Zhejiang province attracted nearly 6 million views on the Douyin platform (the Chinese version of TikTok) last week, according to the South China Morning Post on September 29.

In the video posted on the account @lanxichen, the mother forced her son (who is in elementary school) to stand in the yard. The mother stood on the balcony of the second floor of the apartment and continuously poured water on her son. Despite her son's protests, the mother insisted on carrying out the punishment.

The mother punished her son after receiving a call from the teacher the day before. Specifically, the teacher reported that her son had thrown water at a classmate from the third floor of the school, in addition to throwing a milk carton at a classmate.

The boy claimed he had seen his classmates playing around and thought it was just a joke. So his mother decided to "let him experience what it's like to have water poured over him."

“Did you think about the children downstairs when you threw water on them?” the mother asked her son when he complained that he was cold. She only stopped pouring water after her son expressed remorse.

This mother's way of raising her child has received support from many social media users in China. "This is the best way of raising a child I have ever seen. The mother does not vent her anger but calmly teaches her son through experience and reason," commented a Douyin user.

Another commented: "No one loves children more than their mother. She did it for the good of her own children." However, some people questioned whether the punishment was "too harsh".

In response to the criticism, the mother said that if she did not discipline him strictly this time, "what if next time my son thinks that throwing rocks at others is fun?"
