The Guardian newspaper reported on June 24 that French police and prosecutors are investigating the cause of a 37-year-old woman being attacked and seriously injured by three wolves at a zoo near Paris.

The wolf bit the animal "on the neck, calf and back" on June 23 at the Wow Safari Thoiry Zoo, about 40 km west of Paris, according to a source.

Versailles chief prosecutor Maryvonne Caillibotte initially said the woman's life was in danger, but a source later said the injuries were no longer life-threatening.

According to initial investigations, the anonymous woman went out for a jog early in the morning of June 23, after spending the night with her family at a motel in the zoo. CEO of Wow Safari Thoiry Zoo, Christelle Bercheny, said that the woman walked across the reserve, a place that is usually "only accessible by car".

She said there are signs reminding people of the “principles of survival” that must be followed at the zoo. “Animal behavior in the sanctuary is that of a free-ranging or semi-free-ranging animal,” Bercheny said, referring to their response to human intrusion.

Lodges in the wolf enclosure are advertised on the zoo's website for between 220 and 760 euros a night, promising "silence, rest and disconnection", according to the zoo's advertising. The service offers "a unique, intimate experience with Arctic wolves that you can see from your living room".

Emergency services then rushed to the scene, and the wolves were "moved away, then returned to their area," according to prosecutor Caillibotte.

A source said the woman must have previously gotten past "security systems, trenches and electric fences to keep the animals inside". Police are investigating the incident.

Thoiry Zoo was founded in 1968 by Paul de la Panouse, owner of a local castle that had been in his family since the 16th century. He later sold the zoo to a group of investors in 2018.
