The US Department of Commerce has announced that it has opened national security investigations related to the import of personal protective equipment, medical items, robots and industrial machinery. These investigations, conducted under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, were launched on September 2 but were only now being announced.
The investigation could lead to higher tariffs on a range of products, including masks, syringes, infusion pumps, and industrial robots and machinery, including programmable mechanical systems and industrial presses. This is seen as a measure to protect domestic supply chains, reduce dependence on foreign imports, and protect US national security.
According to Bloomberg, new investigations show that the Trump administration is concerned about the US's dependence on foreign supplies of a range of consumable medical supplies, including syringes, catheters, sutures and gauze.
The Commerce Department will also review trade in medical protective equipment, such as gloves and masks.
The new investigation into medical devices will not include prescription drugs, biologics and other pharmaceuticals, as they are covered by a separate investigation the Commerce Department is conducting.
The investigation into industrial machinery and robotics will focus on computer-controlled mechanical systems, milling machines, as well as stamping and pressing machines commonly used in factories.
