The US and China have a 'duty' to manage relations responsibly

On July 8, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen expressed confidence that the US and China have made some progress and can have a healthy relationship.

At the end of a visit that included 10 hours of meetings with senior Chinese officials, Ms. Yellen said that if the United States were to take measures to curb overseas investment, it would be done in a transparent, centralized manner with a rule-making process.

The head of the US financial industry affirmed that the country will promote "targeted actions" to protect national security interests, but not to "gain economic advantage".

According to Ms. Yellen, Washington and Beijing may have important disagreements that need to be discussed directly, but the world's two largest economies have an "obligation" to manage relationships responsibly.

Speaking at the US Embassy in Beijing, she said: "Both countries have an obligation to manage this relationship responsibly: to find ways to live together and share global prosperity," stressing that high-level talks were "essential".

Secretary Yellen believes the US and China will communicate more frequently in the future.
