Russia arrests another senior military official on corruption charges

The Russian military court has decided to detain the Director of the Main Communications Directorate, General Vadim Shamarin, for two months to investigate allegations of receiving bribes of an exceptionally large amount.

The head of the General Directorate of Information and Communications, General Vadim Shamarin, was arrested on bribery charges.

According to TASS news agency, a Russian military court has decided to arrest the Director of the Main Directorate of Communications of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, General Vadim Shamarin, on charges of accepting bribes.

The decision, made on May 22, said that General Shamarin was detained for two months. He is suspected of committing a crime under Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation on accepting a bribe in an especially large amount.

If convicted, Mr. Shamarin faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a fine of 100 times the bribe amount. Under Russian law, accepting a bribe of at least 1 million rubles ($11,090) is a crime.

Previously, Russian authorities also arrested Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov and Head of the Defense Ministry's Personnel Department Yury Kuznetsov on suspicion of accepting bribes of an especially large amount.

According to lawyers, these cases are not related.
