According to Reuters, on May 19, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that "the last remnants" of arms control agreements between Russia and the US "are gradually disappearing".
"We can only regret that there is no serious and substantive contact on arms control between Moscow and Washington," Peskov told reporters. The Kremlin spokesman's comments came as a group of Republican lawmakers recently proposed a bill calling for the US to withdraw from the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START). New START, signed in 2010 to limit the two countries' arsenals to a maximum of 1,550 nuclear warheads, is the only remaining legally binding treaty on nuclear arms control between Russia and the US. Russia suspended its participation in the treaty at the end of February.
