What should the education sector do to face the challenge of AI?

Candidates using artificial intelligence (AI) products to cheat in the 2025 High School Graduation Exam is unprecedented in Vietnam.

This phenomenon shows that education and training activities are facing many challenges in the digital age, especially the story of "weighing the scales" in assessment tests and exams...

AI brings many new opportunities for education and training in the development process when it can help students proactively learn anytime, anywhere, personalize the learning process, develop critical thinking... However, that process also poses challenges in assessing students' abilities when cheating becomes more sophisticated and high risk occurs in all learning processes. Students can use AI to do exercises, write essays, solve problems in online exams... This makes it difficult to determine the true ability of learners. Therefore, learning and learning assessment need to have appropriate shifts to keep up with AI, promote the advantages of AI as well as master AI to properly assess learners' abilities.

According to Meritorious Teacher Tran Duc Huyen, Principal of Hoang Viet Primary, Secondary and High School (Tan An Ward), AI is essentially a tool, a means and has no fault. The problem of cheating lies in the ethics and integrity of learners and candidates... Therefore, it is necessary to educate users in ethics in advance to use AI responsibly, keep information confidential and be honest. In the school environment, ethics education needs to be implemented in all subjects and lesson content; teachers guide students to use AI (as a tool, as a partner) to study effectively by answering questions, finding methods while the subject is still the student who directly does the test...

To achieve that goal, schools must incorporate AI into educational activities to promote students' learning capacity and teachers' creativity... Each teacher must have knowledge of AI when teaching to guide students in effectively exploiting AI in their subjects.

Mr. Mai Dinh Bich, Principal of Hoang Hoa Tham Secondary School (Ea Tul Commune) said that bringing AI into schools is an inevitable trend. The school has exploited AI in the operation and management process in the 2024 - 2025 school year; orienting teachers to proactively learn about AI products to use in the research and preparation of lectures; using them directly in each lesson through creating videos illustrating situations and experiments in textbooks...

Along with learning is the assessment of learners' abilities in a fair and transparent manner suitable for the digital context. Meritorious Teacher Tran Duc Huyen added that the school has shifted from assessing results to assessing the learning process for many years now. Teachers will assign assignments and guide students to use AI to solve them; then test students' understanding through similar exercises in class or discussion forms with changed questions but keeping the main idea. This will ensure that students must truly understand the lesson to answer, not simply copy AI's solutions.

Associate Professor, Dr. Le Duc Niem, Vice Principal of Tay Nguyen University, affirmed that AI users must be responsible, in charge of, and lead AI. This means that whether AI creates an economic model, analyzes literature, or writes a perfect essay, users must read, understand, and be able to edit and adjust the content. Training institutions must innovate methods of testing and evaluating students, including creating unexpected elements in questions or exercises. This could be asking students to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of an AI-generated model or find other ways to solve it. Student evaluation also needs to be linked to direct deductive thinking interviews, because AI can help students write a perfect essay, but the process of reporting and answering questions from the evaluation board will reveal the true understanding of the student; along with that, increasing the proportion of direct evaluation points in the scoring structure to evaluate students' abilities more accurately.
