Research must go to the classroom, improving the quality of short-term Chinese teaching

GD&TĐ - On September 14, at the Closing Ceremony and Launch of the Scientific Journal No. 1 of the Bac Nha Institute for Applied Language Research, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang (Chairman of the Chinese Language Teaching and Research Association - Vietnam Linguistics Association) congratulated the initial results and made a series of strategic recommendations for the institute.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang is one of the leading scholars in Linguistics in Vietnam. He is currently the Chairman of the Chinese Teaching and Research Association - Vietnam Linguistics Association, and has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Language & Life Magazine for many years. With more than four decades of research, teaching and participating in the appraisal of scientific works, the Professor is one of the influential academic voices in the field of foreign language training, especially Chinese.

In his speech at the event “ The Closing Ceremony and Launch of the Scientific Journal No. 1 of the Bac Nha Institute for Applied Language Research” on September 14, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang emphasized the concept of “language market” - an approach that foreign language training must be closely linked to social supply and demand. The professor also pointed out that Chinese is experiencing unprecedented strong development in Vietnam, leading to an increasing demand for quality training.

What worries the Professor is the lack of specific quantitative research for short-term training programs: how many vocabulary, sentence patterns, and syntactic structures do learners need to achieve minimum proficiency in a certain period of time. According to him, determining clear competency standards will help teach effectively and design more realistic curriculum.

In addition, the Professor also emphasized the localization of Chinese textbooks, instead of relying entirely on books imported from China. He believes that there is a need for learning materials suitable for the Vietnamese context, especially in high-demand industries such as tourism , trade, and services. These views show the vision of a scholar who is not only attached to theory but also always aims at practical application, aiming to improve the quality of foreign language training in Vietnam.

Expressing his joy at the rapid growth of the Bac Nha Institute for Applied Language Research after only two years of establishment, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang affirmed that the launch of the Scientific Journal No. 1 is an encouraging achievement. He emphasized that this is not only a place to collect research works, but also an important academic forum for lecturers, researchers, and graduate students to publish results, accumulate work points and develop academically.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang also believes that if we persist in seriously implementing it, within the next 1-2 years, the Journal can be considered for scoring, creating a great advantage for the Chinese research team in Vietnam.

In addition, the Professor also suggested that the Institute consider changing its name to "magazine" or a more suitable designation, which would open up great opportunities for authors, especially young lecturers who are on the path to achieving academic titles and degrees.

Science Journal No. 1 - An important step forward of Bac Nha Institute

Bac Nha Institute was established in December 2023, under the TMEDU educational ecosystem. After nearly two years, the Institute has recorded a number of results:

● Academic: Establishing a Scientific Council with the participation of leading experts such as Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Anh, Associate Professor, Dr. Cam Tu Tai, Associate Professor, Dr. Luu Hon Vu, Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc, Dr. Tran Thi Hoang Anh, Dr. Do Hong Thanh...; In particular, the Institute received guidance and direction from Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Khang in the role of Senior Advisor of the Scientific Council.

● Scientific works: Launched the first issue of the journal; organized dozens of seminars, talks, thematic series and hundreds of free training sessions, attracting thousands of participants.

● Curriculum - learning materials: Developing Thanhmaihsk Chinese system; Deploying M-Sutong Chinese solution set; Applying 5-star teacher evaluation tool to manage training quality; Completing e-learning learning materials system and directly training hundreds of college students, currently having nearly 50 bachelors, of which 80% graduated with honors.

● Teaching: Continuously updating new methods, contributing to improving the quality of the teaching staff and expanding the learning materials ecosystem for learners, helping to fulfill the dreams of nearly ten thousand short-term Chinese language students.

In 2025, one of the Institute's outstanding achievements is the Scientific Journal "Research on Chinese Teaching and Learning" No. 1 , including 13 selected research works, revolving around four main topics:

● Standardizing teacher competencies - The foundation for future Chinese language education

● Chinese for Vietnamese - Overcoming difficulties, grasping effectively

● Innovative methods - Maximize teaching effectiveness and exploit learners' potential

● Decoding the language elements - Mastering Chinese from the basics
