On March 18, the Center for Nephrology and Andrology, People's Hospital 115 (HCMC) announced that it had received and successfully performed emergency surgery on a rare case of testicular rupture.

Specifically, the patient is a 51-year-old male who was hospitalized with pain, swelling, and bruising in the left groin area.

Taking a medical history, the patient said that while he was sleeping, his 8-year-old son hit him on the left side of his scrotum with a wooden toy. He then took painkillers but the pain did not subside.

Upon entering the hospital, the patient was examined by the on-duty team and had a scrotal ultrasound which discovered a ruptured left testicle and the doctors indicated surgery.

During surgery, it was noted that the patient's left testicle was ruptured, with blood clots surrounding it.

The doctors removed all the blood clot, sutured the tunica albuginea, preserved the testicle and drained it.

After 5 days of treatment, the patient fully recovered and was discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Tran Thanh Phong, Deputy Head of the Department of Urology and Kidney Transplantation, People's Hospital 115, said that testicular rupture is a male medical emergency that occurs when the sheath surrounding the testicle is torn, usually due to direct impact on the scrotum.

The rate of scrotal trauma is relatively rare (usually less than 1% of trauma cases), in which impact trauma accounts for 50% of scrotal trauma cases, often due to causes such as: playing sports , motorcycle accidents, daily activities...

Testicular rupture if not diagnosed and treated promptly can lead to serious complications: testicular atrophy, infection, and possible testicular removal.

More seriously, it can affect reproductive function and overall health of men, so patients need to go to the hospital for examination and early treatment when injured.

To reduce the risk of testicular rupture, Dr. Phong recommends that men should take preventive measures such as: using protective equipment such as athletic cups, jockstraps when participating in sports with high risk of collision, and being careful in daily activities to avoid activities that can cause scrotal injury.
