On June 23, Japan sent a response to the US after President Joe Biden asserted that he had persuaded Japanese leaders to strengthen their defense capabilities. But Tokyo's response said that the decision to increase defense spending was Japan's own.

In a speech to supporters in California on June 20, the US President emphasized that Japan has not increased its defense budget for a long time. Therefore, Mr. Biden met with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on three different occasions, including at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May, and persuaded the Japanese leader to increase the defense budget.

At another campaign event on June 19, Mr. Biden affirmed that he had worked to change Japan's attitude toward South Korea and its involvement in Europe.

Not only that, throughout his re-election campaign, President Biden also repeatedly emphasized that his efforts contributed to Japan's policy decisions.

In fact, Japan plans to spend about $300 billion on defense spending over the next five fiscal years, double the previous five-year program.
