Many schools cannot recruit students.

The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City has just announced the additional recruitment of 2,203 10th grade students for the 2024-2025 school year to 36 public high schools. The condition for participating in the additional recruitment is that students do not pass any of their wishes and must have entrance exam scores in 3 subjects: Math, Literature, Foreign Language plus priority points greater than or equal to the standard score of the 3rd wish of the public high school they want to apply for.

Up to now, many schools have reported that they have only received a few applications, not enough to meet the assigned quota. Suburban schools have received few applications because their geographical location is not convenient for students to go to school. On the contrary, the top schools in the city center that many candidates are interested in have set the admission scores too high, so few applications meet the requirements.

Mr. Luong Van Minh (Principal of Can Thanh High School, Can Gio District) informed that the school only received 3 additional admission applications, while there are still 89 missing positions. This is not unexpected because Can Thanh High School is 60 km from the city center, students from other places rarely choose to apply to the school. Mr. Minh further explained that local students who passed the school had already applied for admission, while the remaining few did not have enough points to be considered for admission. Meanwhile, students in the city center rarely choose to go to Can Gio District to enroll because it is too far. "Therefore, even if there are additional admissions, there will not be enough students. The school also considered using daily shuttle buses to attract students, but it is not feasible," Mr. Minh added.

Many high schools in the inner city of Ho Chi Minh City, although recruiting additional students, have very few successful applicants. Ms. Bui Minh Tam (Principal of Le Quy Don High School, District 3) said that many students really want to study at the school but do not meet the requirements to apply. "Combining the conditions of failing all 3 wishes and having an exam score equal to or greater than the standard score of the 3rd wish, which is 23 points, it is difficult for any student to meet. Therefore, the school did not receive any applications despite lacking 15 quotas," Ms. Tam said.

Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District) and Phu Nhuan High School (Phu Nhuan District) after a week of announcing additional admissions were also "empty-handed" because no students submitted applications. Mr. Tran Cong Tuan (Principal of Phu Nhuan High School) shared: "The school lacks 12 quotas because some students passed the entrance exam but transferred to private schools or studied abroad. According to regulations, candidates must have 24 points or more and fail all 3 wishes to be eligible to apply for additional admissions. The number of candidates who meet this criterion is very rare."

A representative of Nguyen Du High School (District 10) informed that the admission score for the school is 20.5. Therefore, although there are 19 applicants short, only 3 candidates are qualified to apply to the school. Go Vap High School (Go Vap District) has 50 applicants but only received 10 applications. The school representative explained that in reality, students in the area and neighboring localities really want to study at the school but do not meet the requirements. The admission score for the school is 17, which is quite high compared to other schools in the area.

It is expected that on August 6, high schools will announce the list of additional successful candidates. From August 7 to 4:00 p.m. on August 12, schools will accept additional successful candidates.
