Pedagogy attracts candidates and parents
Candidate Le Manh Tien, in An Dong ward, Ho Chi Minh City, has just passed this year's high school graduation exam with a score of 25 points in the A00 subject group (math, physics, chemistry).
With this score, Tien plans to enroll in the finance and banking major at some economic schools in Ho Chi Minh City. However, this male student is regretting his decision to pursue the teaching profession.
Tien knows his score is not too low but it is not easy to "reach" the teacher training majors which have been fiercely competitive for many years.
Tien's score is higher than the minimum score of some pedagogical majors of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and Saigon University, which have just been announced, but is lower than the standard score of previous years. With 25 points, Tien is in a situation where he "regrets to give up, but is afraid to continue", wanting to take a risk with pedagogy but afraid of losing other opportunities.

Not being passionate or too fond of it, Tien wanted to "compete" with the teaching profession when he considered factors such as free tuition, living allowance, easy to find a job after graduating in Ho Chi Minh City and a fairly high and stable income.
Tien looked at the case of his father's sister, whom Tien called an elementary school teacher in Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City, with more than 20 years of experience, with an income of over 30 million VND/month. According to Tien, this income includes salary, allowances, year-round bonuses, and additional income according to Resolution 185 of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, and does not include the time she teaches outside.
Although not rich, he has the most comfortable and stable life among his relatives and can support his relatives.
My uncle and parents both supported Tien to study pedagogy, so he was even more hesitant and wanted to try.
Wanting to study pedagogy for stability, easy job placement, high salary is not only Tien’s concern but also the concern of many candidates in this year’s admission season and in recent years. At admissions counseling programs, many candidates expressed their desire to study pedagogy for the above reasons or because of their family’s wishes.
In 2024, according to information from the Ministry of Education and Training , the number of registered candidates in the field of education and teacher training, ie pedagogy, will increase by 85%, followed by the field of natural sciences with the number of registered candidates increasing by 61% compared to 2023.
At some of the country’s top pedagogical schools, the number of registered candidates has increased sharply. For example, in 2024, at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the number of registered candidates increased by 100% compared to 2023.
This year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and Hanoi University of Education continued to expand their own exams, attracting tens of thousands of candidates, further demonstrating the "hotness" of the education industry.
The predicted benchmark is fierce.
In recent years, the education sector has regained its appeal and become one of the sectors with the highest benchmark scores. This appeal comes from a series of policies that are clearly visible through the numbers for this sector.
First of all, it is necessary to mention that pedagogical students "study and receive salary at the same time" according to the policy of supporting living expenses and tuition fees according to Decree 112/2020.

Pedagogical students who are trained according to social needs and trained by assignment, order or bidding methods are supported with tuition fees equal to the tuition fees of the teacher training institution where they study.
In addition, students are also supported with 3.63 million VND/month to cover living expenses during their time at school and no more than 10 months/school year.
When the Law on Teachers takes effect next year, teachers will be ranked at the top of the administrative career salary scale.
Particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, the teaching profession is even more attractive when there is a special policy according to Resolution 185/2023 of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council on the maximum additional income allowance applied is 1.5 times compared to the salary scale and position.
The highest additional income for teachers in Ho Chi Minh City can be up to 25 million VND/month, paid quarterly (3 months/time).
In early 2024, a teacher who has taught for 30 years in Ho Chi Minh City publicly announced an income of over 412 million VND/year. This income includes teacher salary (including salary and seniority allowances, incentives...) and additional income according to the Resolution of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council. The income level continues to increase as the basic salary increases.
This year, pedagogy is also the major with the highest minimum score in the country. Specifically, at Saigon University, the history and geography pedagogy major has a minimum score of 25, an increase of 6 points compared to last year.

At the University of Education, there are 6 majors with a floor score of 24, also in pedagogical training majors such as mathematics, chemistry, literature, history, geography, and English pedagogy.
In 2024, the benchmark score for a series of pedagogical majors at the University of Education will be above 27 points, meaning that even candidates who score 9 points in a subject will fail.
Similarly, at Saigon University, from a pedagogical major such as music or fine arts, most of the remaining pedagogical majors have a standard score from over 26 to the highest of 28.25 points.
With the current attraction, the 2025 pedagogical benchmark is forecast to be difficult to cool down, and may even continue to increase. Good students, scoring 9 points/subject, can still fail the pedagogical exam, a reality that candidates must face.
