Remember the taste of family breakfast of the old days

My father often said: "When doing heavy work outdoors, eat rice in the morning to fill your stomach", so every morning my mother cooked rice and braised fish.

That year, there was a big flood, the crops failed, and everyone in the family was short of rice. However, my family still maintained the habit of eating rice for breakfast, sometimes porridge mixed with potatoes and corn.

My father told my brothers and me: "Try to eat well so you have the strength to study. Don't worry about your parents. When you're old, you eat less than before." I know my father said that to reassure my brothers and me, but in reality, he tried to hold back so his children could eat well.

My siblings and I understood our parents’ hardships, so we took advantage of every afternoon to go to our grandparents’ garden to weed the vacant land and plant corn and potatoes for breakfast. In the end, God did not disappoint us, and every row of corn and potatoes grew green and healthy.

I still remember that morning. Ba, only 10 years old, got up early to start a fire to boil the corn that she and I had just picked that afternoon. When my parents woke up, the pot of corn was still steaming hot.

Baby Ba happily said: "Today I'll treat the whole family to boiled corn for breakfast." After saying that, Baby Ba struggled to carry the basket of corn from the kitchen and placed it on the table while his parents looked on in amazement.

My mother hugged Ba and kissed him, while my father ate and praised him: Ba is so young but he knows how to boil corn so well. The happiest thing was watching Ut eat until his stomach was full.

Years passed, we grew up and went to the city to study. We worked late every day, so as soon as we woke up in the morning, we ran straight to the shop at the end of the alley to have breakfast so we could study on time.

I remember the first day I sat down to eat a sandwich, I missed breakfast with my family so much. One day I looked over at the table next to me and saw a little boy sitting there eating boiled corn with great relish, which made me reminisce about the steaming basket of corn that little Ba had cooked.

Even though I know my childhood can never return to the full flavor of the old days, my memories always contain warm breakfasts with my parents like that.
