Zhang Shenxinran, a third-year student at Tsinghua University - China's most prestigious university, became famous in 2022 after achieving the highest score in the national college entrance exam (gaokao) in her hometown in Fujian province. She was the first person in her village to pass the exam to Tsinghua and received a scholarship of 105,000 yuan (equivalent to more than 380 million VND). However, Zhang decided to donate all the money to poor students. This action of hers attracted special attention from the media and public opinion.
At that time, some people suspected her of "polish her name" and thought that she donated money to pave the way for her personal media career later. To prove her original intentions were pure, Zhang Shenxinran proactively stayed away from social media for the first two years of university, and only recently reappeared. She frankly shared: "I hope to appear with a completely new identity."

Female student “too pretty to livestream”: Father's stance on protecting child or prejudice?
Not only is Zhang a good student, she also impresses with her beautiful appearance. Many people commented that she resembles the famous actress Chen Duling. Currently, she shares her study experiences, exercise regimens and even live chats on social media platforms.
During a broadcast, when asked by a junior student for tips on studying for the university entrance exam, Zhang gently advised: “Don’t be too stressed. You won’t be able to do all the practice tests, so divide your time for each subject and stick to your plan.” She said she studies about 8 hours a day, reads 500 pages a week and exercises 5-6 times a week.
“There are many types of good students. I am a person who loves studying and also loves beauty. I think the two are not contradictory,” said Zhang, who also shared her desire to become a university or high school teacher in the future.

However, Zhang’s father, Zhang Jiatian, a family education blogger, disagreed with his daughter’s livestreaming. He frankly told the media: “I forbade her from live-streaming. My daughter’s videos attracted tens of thousands of views, and there were even advertising offers. But I did not support it, because livestreaming is not suitable for girls who are too beautiful.”
“As a university student, you can start a business, but you need to have the right direction, you can't do it haphazardly,” he emphasized.
Advanced degrees - a driver or a barrier to different career choices?
According to SCMP , the father’s opinion immediately sparked heated debate on Chinese social media. Many agreed, saying that he was protecting his daughter and that the family did not need to rely on income from livestreaming. Meanwhile, many also expressed regret that a talented and beautiful girl like Zhang was limited in her opportunities to express herself.
“Such a perfect girl in every way deserves to shine,” one user commented.
Another netizen commented: “Shouldn’t Tsinghua University students focus on academics? Is livestreaming a waste of educational resources?” They believe that students from top universities should shine in scientific research, academics or high-tech industries, and not “become celebrities to do online business.”
However, some people also believe that career choices should not be “confined” by degrees. Zhang Shenxinran herself also shared that her ideal future career is to become a university lecturer, but if conditions do not allow, being a high school teacher is also a good choice. She likes to think, answer questions, and livestreaming or making short videos can help her explore her career path.
Furthermore, by sharing her learning experiences, this female student is also spreading a positive attitude towards life. A high degree should not be a limitation, but rather promote confidence to open up more options in life.
According to Info News , society’s expectations of “Tsinghua students” may stem from stereotypes of the elite, but the true elite are those who dare to break the mold and be true to themselves. Life has no absolute right answer. We may not agree with a certain choice, but we should not be quick to judge others as “wasting their degrees” or “not decent enough.”
In today's diverse era, respecting each person's career choices and lifestyles is truly a step forward for society.
