The only female student in the International Math Olympiad team comes from Bac Ninh

Truong Thanh Xuan, a student at Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, is the only female student to make it to the International Mathematics Olympiad team this year, after 5 years of having a team of only male students.

On March 30, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the list of 37 students who passed the selection rounds to be on the teams participating in the regional and international Olympics in 2025.

Accordingly, this year, Vietnam's International Math Olympiad team has 6 members, including a female member, Truong Thanh Xuan, a student of grade 11 Math 1, Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted. Thanh Xuan is also one of the two grade 11 students in the team, the remaining students are all in grade 12.

At the recent national excellent student exam for the 2024-2025 school year, Thanh Xuan won second prize in Math with a score of 27.5, also the highest achievement of the Bac Ninh province Math team.

The female student then made a breakthrough in her review process and passed the international Olympic team selection exam organized by the Ministry of Education and Training to be on the list of 6 members of the Vietnamese team.

The Vietnamese team competing in the 2025 International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) consists of 6 contestants, including 2 from the High School for Gifted Students of Natural Sciences (Hanoi National University), 1 from Ha Tinh High School for Gifted Students, 1 from Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students (Nghe An province), 1 from Bac Ninh High School for Gifted Students and 1 from Le Hong Phong High School for Gifted Students (Ho Chi Minh City).

In this list, two students, Tran Minh Hoang and Nguyen Dang Dung, competed in the 2024 IMO and won 1 Silver Medal and 1 Bronze Medal (respectively). The 2025 IMO is scheduled to be held in Australia from July 10 to 20.

The Vietnamese International Mathematical Olympiad team is mostly male. Previously, Nguyen Thi Viet Ha (Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted) was a female member of the Vietnamese IMO team in 2015. Most recently, in 2020, the Vietnamese IMO team had a new female member, Chu Thi Thanh ( Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted).

In addition to Truong Thanh Xuan, Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted also has 2 other students who have made it to the international Olympic teams this year. Specifically, Ngo Quang Minh, a 12th grader in Chemistry, is one of 4 students on the national team competing in the International Chemistry Olympiad. Nguyen Cong Vinh, a 12th grader in Physics, is one of 8 students on the national team competing in the Asian Physics Olympiad.
