On September 12, 1975, the Southern Institute of Social Sciences, formerly the Institute of Social Sciences, was established under Decision No. 13 of the Central Office for Southern Vietnam.
The Institute was established just a few months after the country's reunification, demonstrating the strategic vision of the Party and State on the role of social sciences in the Southern region.
Through many name changes, the Institute has always developed sustainably, firmly pursuing the goal of "from practice to practice", linking research with urgent issues of social life.
With seven specialized research centers including: Politics and Policy, Economics, Sociology and Environment, History; Archaeology, Culture, Ethnicity and Religion and an abundant scientific force with 4 Associate Professors, 15 Doctors, 38 Masters and many experienced researchers, the Institute has implemented a series of large and outstanding programs and projects such as: Research on the Mekong Delta, urbanization of Ho Chi Minh City, Oc Eo culture or history of exploration of the Southern region, etc.

Many research results have become an important scientific basis for the work of formulating guidelines and policies of the Party and State.
Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Tuan Hung, Director of the Southern Institute of Social Sciences, emphasized: “The 50th anniversary of the establishment is an opportunity for each of us to review the tradition of solidarity, creativity, and adherence to the reality of the South. This is the driving force to continue to innovate and expand cooperation to become a center of connection in social sciences of the region in the new development period”.

In addition to research, the Southern Institute of Social Sciences is also an early training institution for social sciences in the South. During the period from 1985 to 2009, the Institute trained 61 masters, 105 doctors and provided high-quality intellectual human resources for many research institutes, universities and localities in the region.
Over the past half century, the Southern Institute of Social Sciences has made its mark as a "cradle of knowledge" about the land and people of the South, while affirming its role as a center for strategic research in the whole country.
In the 2025-2030 period, the Institute aims to promote achievements, overcome limitations, strengthen international cooperation and linkages to continue contributing to the sustainable development of the South in the new era.
