Mr. Ma Duc Tin in Truong Thanh A hamlet, Truong Khanh commune ( Can Tho city), introduces the Indian peacock that has been raised for many years.
Introducing to me the peacock cage area which was built airy, clean both inside and outside, Mr. Ma Duc Tin said: "In 2019, I raised the first pair of peacocks for decoration. By the end of the year, they laid 20 eggs, with an 80% hatching rate. Seeing that peacocks are easy to raise and the care regimen is like raising a flock of chickens, I decided to keep all the hatched peacocks for testing. I also boldly bought 20 more adult peacocks (16 females, 4 males) to raise and built a cage to develop the peacock flock. Up to now, through each year of peacock breeding and selecting parent breeds, the total number of peacocks is 134, including 20 females, 5 males, the rest are chicks and reserve birds; the number of breeding birds sold is more than 1,500. Particularly from the beginning of 2025 to the present time, more than 70 peacocks have been sold equipment, estimated to sell 300 peacocks for the whole year, after deducting all expenses, profit is more than 300 million VND".
According to Mr. Ma Duc Tin, for peacocks to develop well, the cage must be built airy and divided into separate cages for parent birds, reserve birds and chicks to ensure adequate food for each age of the bird. The size of each cage will be 3m wide, 5m long; height from 3-3.5m. The parent birds are kept in the same cage with 4 females and 1 male. The reserve birds and chicks are kept in each cage with 5-50 birds/cage, depending on the size of the bird. Peacock food is similar to chicken food such as rice, corn, fruits, green vegetables, tubers... To have beautiful, shiny feathers, peacocks need to be supplemented with vitamins for chickens, ripe fruits, tomatoes, fed 3-4 times/week; breeders can prevent diseases for peacocks by using vaccines according to the vaccination schedule for chickens.
Currently, Mr. Ma Duc Tin has a total herd of 134 pigs.
Mr. Ma Duc Tin shares his experience: Peacocks lay the most eggs when they are 3 years old or older, and their lifespan can be up to 20 years. Adult Indian peacocks weigh 4-6kg/bird, are easy to raise, and do not require much food costs. Peacocks hatch within 1-6 months of being sold, reaching a weight of 700 grams or more, with a selling price of 2.5-6 million VND/pair; adult parent peacocks 1 year old or older cost 14-16 million VND/pair. In addition to raising peacocks to supply breeding stock to the market, Mr. Tin also buys breeding stock from other households, so he always has a source of goods available to meet the demand for large quantities of breeding stock from buyers nationwide.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang, Deputy Head of the Mobile Forest Ranger and Forest Fire Prevention and Fighting Team, Department of Rural Development and Forest Ranger of Can Tho City, said: "Indian peacocks are raised at Mr. Ma Duc Tin's household in group IIB (endangered, precious, rare species); therefore, when he started raising peacocks, Mr. Tin fully registered with the unit about the number of flocks raised, along with regularly recording in the bird monitoring book, about flock changes during the raising process, to report to the unit to grasp the situation. Over time, monitoring the development of peacock raising at Mr. Tin's household, he noticed that the number of birds increased more and more, bringing high economic value to the family, especially with Mr. Tin's Indian peacock raising model, which has contributed to the formation of a new raising model that brings income to many local households in and outside the province. From a professional perspective, we recommend that households, when wanting to raise peacocks, must register with a professional unit to receive support and guidance, as well as fully implement the regulations. Necessary procedures and documents to avoid future consequences when raising endangered, precious, and rare animals.
