Mr. Truong Thai Long with the frog farming model combined with snakehead fish farming.
After returning to his hometown after being discharged from the army, Mr. Long nurtured the idea of starting a business to improve his family's economy . In 2021, he mobilized four veteran members to establish the "Frog and Pangasius Farming" Cooperative in Lang Ham A Hamlet, starting to raise 10,000 frogs and fish fry. In the early days of starting the business, the Cooperative encountered many difficulties in terms of capital and techniques. Undaunted, Mr. Long proactively visited models in other provinces, learned techniques... to apply appropriately to local conditions.
After 1 year of perseverance, the model brought unexpected results. Frogs raised for about 3-4 months can be sold, weighing 200-250g/fish, with stable purchasing by traders. Catfish will reach commercial size after 6-8 months (about 150-200g/fish), with a good selling price. After 1 year, the cooperative earned 225 million VND. After deducting expenses, each member earned an average profit of more than 52 million VND. This is a positive result, motivating members to stick with the model.
Mr. Long said: “The idea of raising frogs together with snakehead fish comes from production practice. Frogs eat floating bait, while snakehead fish utilize leftover food, keeping the water environment cleaner. Thanks to that, both grow well, have less disease, low loss rate, and higher economic efficiency than raising them separately."
From the effectiveness of the model, in 2022, the cooperative attracted 5 more farmers to participate, expanding the area to more than 1,500m², raising over 100,000 frogs and 10,000 snakehead fish. According to the cooperative members, the frog and snakehead fish farming model is suitable for households with small farming areas, moderate investment capital and is very easy to replicate.
The valuable thing is that the model not only helps members develop the economy, but also encourages them to join cooperative groups, creating collective strength in production and consumption of products. Many farmers, thanks to participating in the "Frog and Pangasius Farming" Cooperative Group, have escaped near poverty, with a stable income of nearly 100 million VND/year. Mr. Truong Van Quang, a member of the cooperative group, shared: "The brothers in the group are united, supporting each other with breeds and frog and fish farming techniques. In the past year, my family has earned nearly 100 million VND from this model."
Not only helping cooperative members develop production and increase income, Mr. Long's model of raising frogs and snakehead fish has also spread strongly to farmers in the area. Many households have come to learn how to build cages, choose breeds, treat water sources and stocking techniques. Mr. Long is always willing to share his experiences, from fermenting microorganisms to reduce odors, to contacting traders to purchase products...
Currently, the model has become a bright spot in rural economic development. Raising frogs combined with snakehead fish shows high flexibility, because frogs are harvested quickly, with short-term capital turnover, while snakehead fish bring long-term, stable income. In addition, utilizing agricultural by-products such as vegetables, bran, golden apple snails, etc. as food helps significantly reduce costs.
According to Mr. Truong Thai Long, the greatest value is not only in the profit, but also in the joy of seeing people around them have more livelihoods and rise up to become rich. Mr. Long confided: "If we know how to change our thinking, choose smart farming methods and cooperate together, farmers can absolutely get rich right on their homeland."
