Enfabrica, founded in 2019, stands out for its technology that connects more than 100,000 GPUs into a single system. This solution can help Nvidia build integrated AI chip clusters that operate like a supercomputer. This is an important step as modern GPU systems, like the rack containing 72 Blackwell GPUs, are becoming the "heart" of billion-dollar data centers.

This deal is similar to “acquihire” – a form used by large technology corporations such as Meta, Google or Microsoft to attract AI talent without facing legal barriers like M&A deals.

In June, Meta spent $14.3 billion to bring in Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang, while Google and Microsoft also had similar deals with Windsurf and Inflection.

Nvidia has been a relatively inactive acquisition player. Its only previous major acquisition was the $6.9 billion purchase of Mellanox in 2019, which brought it key networking technology for the Blackwell chip generation.

In 2022, the plan to acquire Arm failed due to legal pressure. However, the semiconductor company has recently accelerated its investment: spending $700 million to buy Run:ai, pouring $5 billion into Intel to jointly develop AI chips and nearly $700 million into the UK data center startup Nscale.

With Enfabrica, Nvidia not only added large-scale GPU interconnect technology, but also “bought” a team of elite personnel. This is an important piece of the puzzle that helps the company maintain its position at the center of the global AI craze that started with ChatGPT.
