At around 11:30 p.m. on November 20, a sleeper bus with a Ho Chi Minh City license plate driven by Ho Duy Thoang (40 years old) was carrying about 20 passengers on the Dau Giay - Phan Thiet highway, heading from the Central region. When reaching the section passing through Ham Cuong commune, Ham Thuan Nam district, the car hit a tanker truck with a Dong Nai license plate running in front.
The strong collision caused the front of the passenger bus to be deformed and severely damaged. The bus assistant, Nguyen Van Trong, 40 years old, died on the spot. The driver and 11 injured passengers were taken to Binh Thuan General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Hospital representatives said seven people with minor injuries have been discharged, while four continue to receive treatment.
The 99-km Dau Giay - Phan Thiet Expressway, connecting Dong Nai and Binh Thuan provinces, with a total investment of more than VND12,500 billion, will open to traffic at the end of April 2023. Along with other sections, the route helps shorten the travel time from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang by nearly half, from 9-10 hours to 4-5 hours.
Also on the night of November 20, a sleeper bus with a Ho Chi Minh City license plate was traveling on Highway 741 from Binh Duong to Binh Phuoc. When it reached the section of road in Hoa Loi Ward, Ben Cat City, a motorbike driven by the husband of Mrs. Nguyen Thi My, 53 years old, from Phu Yen, suddenly crossed the road.
Seeing that, the driver immediately braked, combined with the slippery road due to heavy rain, causing the car to spin 180 degrees, hitting the motorbike, causing Mrs. My to be run over and killed, and her husband to be injured.
The passenger bus continued to rush up the sidewalk, pushing many motorbikes from the coffee shops parked on the side of the road. Many customers who were sitting abandoned their seats and ran away in panic.
"I was drinking coffee with my neighbor on the sidewalk, heard a loud noise, looked out onto the street and saw a car coming, so I ran away," said witness Lam.
