According to Deadline , Tran Thanh's Mai became the first Vietnamese film to gross $1 million when it premiered overseas. The film earned $917,000 from 154 theaters in North America and $133,000 from 40 theaters in the UK, France, Germany, Norway, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. Bringing the film's total global revenue to more than $22 million.

In Vietnam, Mai is the highest-grossing movie of all time. After 41 days of release from February 10 (the first day of Lunar New Year), Mai reached 520 billion VND with 6.5 million tickets sold. With 3 movies achieving "huge" revenue, Tran Thanh became the first trillion-dollar director in Vietnam.
The film revolves around the life of the female lead named Mai (Phuong Anh Dao), a nearly 40-year-old masseuse who accidentally meets musician Duong (Tuan Tran) and is pursued by him. Having low self-esteem, Mai does not have the courage to accept the feelings of a guy 7 years her junior.
Compared to the two films Mrs. Nu's House and Godfather, Tran Thanh's Mai received the least mixed reviews. Tran Thanh showed clear improvement, from the camera angle, scene transitions to storytelling. The film no longer has too many scenes of arguing and "marketplace" dialogue between the characters.
Mai is considered Tran Thanh's best movie ever.
