Movie "Red Rain": "Newbie" cries like rain when playing the role of a veteran

Having the name Tan but being short and light, Tran Gia Huy's role in "Red Rain" made an initial impression thanks to his humor. In the end, this is one of the most psychologically heavy roles in the film.

Just one year after graduating, Tran Gia Huy debuted in the film industry with "Red Rain" - a major film project commissioned by the State, which has now earned nearly 500 billion VND. The "gen Z" actor not only received valuable experiences but also endless gratitude to the previous generation, when playing the role of a veteran who survived and returned.

In the film, Tran Gia Huy plays Tan, a small, light-weight and young soldier who was assigned to the K3 Tam Son battalion in the final days. He is one of the few survivors under the bombardment and overwhelming firepower of the other side.

The 23-year-old actor shared that when he received the script for “Red Rain,” he not only analyzed the characters’ psychology on paper, but also had the opportunity to meet and talk in detail with historical witnesses who fought in Quang Tri , such as veterans Nguyen Van Hoi and Tran Trong Can, who belonged to the K3 Tam Dao battalion.

“I went to see them, explained my character and asked them to share their story. My impression was that by the second sentence, they were in tears. Whenever I mentioned my comrades and the battlefield, they couldn’t hold back their tears. I thought, ‘This is it! This is the feeling I need to have when playing the role,’” Tran Gia Huy shared.

Applying it to reality, Tan trained himself mentally. On set, as soon as he heard the music of his fallen comrade, Tan burst into tears and started crying so much that the director had to stop him.

“I couldn’t stop crying. Ms. Huyen (director, Lieutenant Colonel Dang Thai Huyen) who was sitting across from me had to tell me, ‘Tan, stop. Keep your emotions in check, don’t cry yet.’ I kept my breathing steady to stop, but I couldn’t stop. It was as if my ears were ringing and I couldn’t hear the director, because at that time I could only hear the music,” the 23-year-old actress added.

Although he has experience playing a soldier in the TV series “Space of Time” and is currently a police officer in “With You, Peaceful Place,” Huy said his role in “Red Rain” was a completely different experience. Partly because it was a major film and his debut, and partly because the film was based on real historical stories and characters.

To play the role of Tan, the actor lost weight from 65kg to 55kg, his skin was dark from sun exposure and he shaved his hair unevenly. He said that he and the cast sometimes had to soak in cold water (during the rainy and cold season in Quang Tri) to the point that many real special agents on set were afraid.

In the film, the 23-year-old actor also had a scene where he ate a live snake, which surprised the audience. Huy revealed that it was a real, venomous snake, caught right on the set. Although he was very afraid of reptiles, he was determined to overcome himself, actually biting the snake to show the extreme hunger that tormented the soldiers in the citadel.

“I need to be authentic to be afraid, because I need that fear,” Huy shared. “I believe that no role is difficult. The more difficult it is, the more convincing it must be. I have to act in a way that portrays a person returning, inheriting the legacy of his fallen comrades, inspiring today’s youth,” the actor added.

At the beginning of the project, Tran Gia Huy caught the eye of director Dang Thai Huyen after a short graduation film. The film crew invited Huy to audition but did not say what the work was, so when he saw the casting information for “Red Rain,” he actively applied again.

Huy also revealed that from the beginning he aimed for the role of special forces soldier Sen, because this role has very difficult and impressive scenes, typically the scene of him rising from under a layer of dirt and going crazy before the reality of his comrades being sacrificed everywhere.

However, due to his small stature and youthful face, Huy was given the role of Tan, while Sen was given to Le Hoang Long. “When I heard that the role of Sen was given to Long, I agreed that it was very reasonable. I have a biological brother, but he passed away, also named Long. I consider him as my own brother and I also think he is very suitable for the role, so I have no regrets,” said actor Tran Gia Huy.

Tran Gia Huy was born in 2002, graduated from Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema. Huy's father and sister both pursued acting careers but have since retired. He is also a member of the national shuttlecock team. Talking about his future, Huy hopes to be given more diverse opportunities and try his hand at comedy roles.
