After work, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Hai (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi ) hurried from the office to school to pick up her child to take him to the extra class in Cau Giay so that he can start the evening class at 6:00 p.m.
Since August 2023, she has researched and registered her child for extra classes with a famous math teacher who specializes in tutoring students who wish to enter specialized schools and high-quality schools. Although the distance from home to the extra class location is quite far, about more than 10km, she has still accepted to take her child to school for more than half a year now.
"My child's academic performance is considered quite good compared to the general level by the homeroom teacher, but I heard parents say that if they want to pass the entrance exam to prestigious high-quality schools, they have to send their children to review early," Ms. Hai shared.

She thought it would be too early to send her child to school from August 2023, but when she registered for the class, she found out that many families send their children to extra classes from grades 3 and 4. Because she wanted her child to pass the 6th grade entrance exam at Thanh Xuan Secondary School, she did not hesitate to spend about 4 million/month (2 sessions/week) for an intensive class for her child to review.
In addition to Math, Ms. Hai also lets her child learn Literature and English, because if she wants to pass a high-quality school in Hanoi, she must be good at all three subjects. Calculating the total monthly tuition for her child, it costs about more than 10 million VND. "Meanwhile, civil servants like my husband and I only earn more than 15 million VND/month, so we still have to grit our teeth and invest in our child," the female parent shared.
Not only Ms. Hai, many other parents, despite having to spend several million VND/month, time and effort, still do not give up their determination to send their children to specialized schools and high-quality schools.
Ms. Le Thi Nhu (43 years old in Ba Dinh, Hanoi) also spends several million VND/month for her child to go to extra classes, but is still worried that her child will not be able to keep up with the knowledge.
"This year my child is in 5th grade so every month my family has to try to spend a larger amount of money on extra classes in Math, Literature, and English. This amount does not even include the cost of outside materials, but I still live in fear that my child will not be able to keep up with the knowledge," Ms. Nhu confided.
Each extra class at the center costs about 300,000 - 500,000 VND depending on the number of students and the reputation of the teacher. Since her child was in 4th grade, Ms. Nhu has been looking for experienced teachers to help her child gradually grasp advanced knowledge.
Ms. Nhu's family hopes that their child will be admitted to grade 6 at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. If they are not admitted to this school, their next wishes will be to go to Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School or Thanh Xuan High School. "When the child goes to school, the whole family works hard to pick him up and drop him off, worries, but encourages each other to try hard, putting all their efforts into the child," Ms. Nhu said.
The female parent understands that in order for her child to get into a prestigious secondary school, the family must invest money in many places to help the child study. At the same time, proactively urging the child to study on their own is extremely important.
Don't put pressure on your children.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung, a public primary school teacher in Hanoi, said that giving extra classes to thoroughly review knowledge in preparation for the transfer exams is good, but focusing too much on studying will leave children with no time for playing and experiencing.
In addition, parents also need to understand that choosing a school and class depends on the ability of each student. Parents' expectations sometimes create psychological pressure, negatively affecting the child's development.
"If children can study at a high-quality school, that's a good thing. But that doesn't mean parents should put pressure on their children to take extra classes, creating unnecessary stress and anxiety," said Ms. Nhung.
Parents should listen to their children's thoughts and wishes to choose a suitable environment. If you see that your child's abilities cannot meet the requirements of a specialized school or a high-quality school, find another way. Any secondary school has good classes, this will also be an environment for your child to study and develop.
