Justin Trudeau is one of Canada's most popular prime ministers, having been elected in 2015 with an overwhelming majority of the Liberal Party in Parliament . As one of the country's youngest leaders, Trudeau quickly became a role model for Canada's progressive values on the international stage.

According to Reuters, Mr. Trudeau's departure will leave the Liberal Party without an official leader in the context of polls showing that the party will lose heavily to the Conservative Party in the election to be held at the end of October.

Mr Trudeau's resignation is likely to spark calls for snap elections to form a government capable of dealing with US President-elect Donald Trump's administration for the next four years.

Currently, Prime Minister Trudeau's administration is facing many challenges, including personnel and policy implementation. Recently, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland suddenly resigned on December 16, just hours before the Government was scheduled to present its fall economic report. Ms. Freeland stated that the underlying reason for her resignation was due to disagreements on the country's development direction.

The incident has added to the Canadian government's difficulties, especially as the fall economic report is considered an important financial roadmap for the government in the context of Canada facing tariff threats from US President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump has previously threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico unless they stop the flow of migrants and illegal drugs at their borders into Washington, a move that could cause huge economic damage to Canada.

Separately, Canadian Public Television reported that 21 Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau to resign since Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland left.
