Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said on September 4 that in the coming days, the country's new president will dissolve the opposition-dominated National Assembly and launch a wide-ranging anti-corruption campaign.

Mr Sonko was appointed head of Senegal 's government in April 2024 thanks to the support of Mr Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who won a landslide victory in March's presidential election promising radical changes in power.

Prime Minister Sonko made the above statement in the context of the government being criticized by the coalition of former President Macky Sall.

President Faye and Prime Minister Sonko need majority support in parliament to implement the policy changes they have promised, but the majority of seats in parliament are currently held by the opposition, which supports Mr Sall.

According to the Constitution, the President of Senegal cannot dissolve the National Assembly until it has been in office for at least two years, so Mr Faye is likely to act from September 12, exactly 24 months after the first post-election session of the National Assembly.

In addition, Mr. Sonko announced the launch of a comprehensive anti-corruption campaign to strengthen the policy foundation of the new administration.

“We will not tolerate corruption,” the Senegalese prime minister said, adding that Dakar would swiftly implement accountability measures and former leaders would be targeted.
