Smartwatches are gradually dominating traditional watches

Smartwatches "exploded" in Vietnam as well as globally during the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, the feature of tracking health indicators became an important criterion for users to decide to spend money on buying watches. When the pandemic passed, life gradually returned to normal, the habit of using smartwatches made many people "afraid" to return to traditional watches, which only display time, although recently many devices have integrated the feature of measuring indicators combined with smartphones via Bluetooth.

Experts from research firm IDC cite reports that more and more users are switching from traditional watches to models with smart features. In addition, another trend is upgrading devices from the popular segment to the high-end segment.

Smartwatches help measure and warn early about risks affecting users' health, so they are increasingly popular.

According to a report by market research firm Counterpoint Research, the global smartwatch market in the second quarter of 2023 increased by 11.1% compared to the same period in 2022. Apple, Huawei and Samsung are still the leading brands in the overall smartwatch market. However, Apple and Samsung both saw a decline, Huawei is rising by capturing 10% of the market share.

In just the last 2 quarters of the year, a series of major electronics brands brought their latest smartwatch models to Vietnam. Among them, Huawei will bring 7 different models of the same Watch GT 4 line, with enough versions for both male and female users.

Explaining the above decision, Mr. Yuansong Gong, Vice President of Healthcare and Wearables, Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG), assessed that Vietnam, with the largest young population in Southeast Asia, has become a developing market for smart wearables, where people are clearly aware of the benefits that these products bring. However, to conquer this group of customers, smartwatches in particular and smart wearables in general do not stop at health monitoring features.

"In addition to features, manufacturers must also pay attention to fashion issues. We believe that smartwatches must now also be fashion-oriented, so that watches become a decorative item, suitable for aesthetics, expressing the personality and taste of each person," Mr. Yuangsong Gong shared with Thanh Nien Newspaper.

Mr. Gong is also not "afraid" that electronic devices must follow fashion because unlike clothes, accessories such as handbags, hats, shoes... that always change with each season, according to trends, watches are not a fashion line that must "transform" regularly. This fact is proven by the existence of traditional watches when now many people still choose this product line for certain occasions to express their personality, ego as well as their taste and class.

Many training features are built into smartwatches.

"With watches, changing the display face and strap also helps to change the aesthetic and fashion taste, and also shows each person's lifestyle," Mr. Gong added.

In addition to the need to monitor common health indicators, recently on the market, some companies have launched product lines focusing on important medical features such as watches that help measure blood pressure, monitor blood sugar index... However, due to their medical relevance, these devices must be certified by specialized agencies, so their presence is limited in some markets.
