According to the Guardian newspaper, on September 26, a customer accidentally discovered a rare orange lobster while walking past a seafood tank at a Tops supermarket in New York state, USA.
The person who discovered it was Kyle Brancato. He said the shrimp looked very different from the rest because of its bright orange color, and many customers may have thought it was sick and did not buy it.
Normally, seeing an orange lobster means it has been boiled and served on a plate. So when he saw this lobster alive and crawling in the tank for sale, he was so surprised that he had to take a second look.
So he decided to buy it, with the hope of releasing it. Having no experience in caring for lobsters, Brancato borrowed water from a local restaurant, then bought a tank and canned seawater to temporarily keep it.
On September 24, the lobster was released into the waters of Long Island Sound, just one day before National Lobster Day in the US - the peak of the annual lobster fishing season in this country.
The unusual lobster was quickly named Jean-Clawed Van Damme. According to Humane Long Island and the New York Aquarium, the two organizations that assisted in the release, the chances of finding an orange lobster like this are “one in 30 million.”
Earlier in 2021, another orange lobster was rescued by a couple from a supermarket in Ontario (Canada) after being abandoned in a tank for weeks because of its unusual color, causing fear among customers and even being "bullied" by other lobsters. The lobster was eventually brought to an aquarium for long-term care.
