Early implementation of the project to solidify Hoang Sa road - Son Tra peninsula area

The Chairman of the City People's Committee signed Decision No. 1152/QD-UBND approving the project of Reinforcing Hoang Sa Road - Son Tra Peninsula Area with a total cost of 77.5 billion VND. This is not only a vital traffic axis connecting the inner city of Da Nang with Son Tra Peninsula but also has many economic, defense and tourism implications.

Urgent investment

In fact, over the years, this road section has often been severely affected by sea waves, storms and landslides, posing potential risks to traffic safety and disruption.

According to the Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects for Transport and Agricultural Works in Da Nang (investor), heavy rains in October 2022 and 2023 have seriously affected the roads in the Son Tra Peninsula area, especially on the Hoang Sa route, many points have seen landslides on both positive and negative slopes, and some sections of the route have broken roadbeds...

As a frequent traveler on the route, Mr. Nguyen Van Tu (resident of Tho Quang ward) said that the road surface has many small, narrow, winding, steep sections but lacks convex mirrors and danger warning signs. Meanwhile, the road often has falling rocks, landslides, and potential accidents.

Ms. Tran Thi Phuong (a resident living near the road) said that at night the road is often dark, with little lighting, and with the high speed of motorbikes, there are many potential risks. It is necessary to install additional lighting systems and warning signs.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyen (an employee at the InterContinental Danang Resort) said: “The situation of monkeys and some wild animals often suddenly crossing the road also increases the risk of accidents. Many times I saw tourists brake suddenly to avoid monkeys, luckily they did not fall off their bikes.”

According to the Department of Construction, the solidification of Hoang Sa Street is an urgent requirement to ensure traffic safety and people's lives. Currently, the rainy and stormy season is approaching, many sections of the road are directly hit by waves, damaging the road surface structure and causing serious erosion. If there is no solution to solidify by using breakwaters and reinforcing the slopes, the risk of road collapse and causing accidents for vehicles is very high.

Many construction solutions

Son Tra is the “green lung” of Da Nang, and is also a famous eco-tourism destination with millions of visitors each year. Hoang Sa Road is the main route that brings tourists to the peninsula, connecting places such as Linh Ung Pagoda, But Beach, Black Rock Beach, thousand-year-old banyan tree, etc. The solidification of the road not only maintains stable tourism activities but also creates a basis for developing more services, contributing to enhancing the economic value of the sea and islands.

According to Decision 1152/QD-UBND of the City People's Committee, on the scale of construction investment, measures must be taken to protect the safety of the project, limit the situation of rolling rocks, sliding, landslides, and damage to the road surface on Hoang Sa Street at 33 locations according to the approved investment policy.

At the same time, due to the complex terrain and geology of the area, the geophysical structure is not uniform, so it is necessary to immediately deploy measures to ensure construction safety, limit rock rolling, slope collapse (positive and negative) as well as research long-term, sustainable solutions on the route according to the approved investment policy of the People's Committee of Da Nang city.

Regarding the structural scale and technical solutions: For group design solutions, the design will handle damaged points, positive slope and negative slope slides and rolling rocks on the road according to the following design solutions:

Solution group l - handling slope collapse due to steep terrain; reinforcement with ground anchor retaining wall system, ground nails combined with reinforced concrete frame, combined with surface treatment solutions, underground drainage system and surface drainage.

Solution group 2 - handling rolling rock positions; combining an active anti-rockfall net system, using steel mesh to protect rock slopes in the form of hanging or anchoring with rock nails or rock anchors, and a passive anti-rockfall system, using high-intensity anti-rockfall fences.

Solution group 3 - handling rolling rocks, sliding slopes; solutions for cutting soil, reducing slope load, digging slopes; combining with vertical reinforcement of V-shaped steel piles 100x100.

Solution group 4 - handling mud and rock floods and flows; reinforcement with open dam retaining walls, underground drainage systems and surface drainage.

Solution group 5 - repair damaged drainage systems; repair drainage systems, drainage ditches, sewers.

And solution group 6 - clean and beautify the slope surface.
