There is a story that no one would believe if told. My father-in-law was 52 years old, and the funeral had just been held that morning, but in the afternoon my mother-in-law did not turn back, hurriedly caught a bus to the city to go to work. What is more remarkable is that during the entire funeral, she did not shed a single tear.

The villagers whispered, saying she had a heart of stone. But I knew the story behind it was not as simple as everyone thought.

My mother-in-law and father-in-law's life was a long series of bitter and stormy days. My father-in-law was an extremely selfish person, never caring about the feelings of others.

I still remember clearly that family meals were like a battle. Every meal he scolded her, sometimes even "hitting" her. I witnessed it all, very upset but did not dare to say a word.

One day, my father-in-law started to be violent again. I couldn't stand it anymore and pulled his hand back. But he was stronger and slapped me. I bit his hand hard. He cried out in pain before letting my mother-in-law go.

I looked straight at him and said: "If you beat your wife, I won't interfere, but if you beat my mother-in-law, that's not okay!"

After that incident, I thought my father-in-law would calm down a bit, but no, he was still the same, hanging out at bars every night, coming home drunk. When he got home, he didn't just break things, he also found excuses to cause trouble and scold people. My husband was beaten by his father since he was a child, so he was afraid of his father. When he saw his father causing trouble, he could only hide in a corner. Later, he asked to work at a far away construction site, only coming home to visit for 2-3 days every 1-2 months.

One night, while drunk, he had a stroke and fell on the fence next to the house. A neighbor who was working the night shift saw him and shouted, then everyone knew and took him to the hospital. Although his life was saved, my father-in-law was paralyzed and had to stay in one place.

My mother-in-law had to take care of him, but his temper did not change. Every time she fed him, he would scold her or spit rice at her. My mother-in-law could not stand it anymore so she discussed with my husband that she wanted to put her father-in-law in a nursing home.

She said: "I'm going to put your father in a nursing home. Don't worry, I'll go to work and earn money, take care of the expenses myself, and won't bother you guys."

I understood, my mother-in-law was cornered. So I quickly researched and found an affordable nursing home.

But when this news reached the sisters-in-law, they immediately came to the house and started cursing loudly.

At that time, I could not control myself, stood in front of my mother-in-law, and shouted straight at them: "Whoever thinks they are filial, take your father home and raise him! If you leave it to me, the only way is to send him to a nursing home!"

Hearing me say that, they fell silent.

My mother-in-law did not want to continue living in a situation where she was abused by her relatives, so she followed an acquaintance to the city to work as a maid.

Every month she sent me money to pay for my father-in-law’s nursing home. I told her to keep it for herself, but she refused, insisting it was her responsibility.

Then my father-in-law had another stroke at the nursing home and was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

My mother-in-law came home the night before the funeral. From beginning to end, she did not shed a single tear.

Seeing this, my sister-in-law insinuated that my mother-in-law was heartless. I couldn't stand it, so I told her: "If you want to cry, then cry. Don't speak ill of others! When he was alive, you never showed up to take care of him. What do you want to show off now?"

That morning, after my father-in-law’s burial, my mother-in-law stayed home to clean the house for a while before packing up and leaving. Watching her back disappear, I was filled with indescribable emotions.

I know, my mother-in-law is starting to live for herself.

What a difficult journey she has taken. She has endured years of humiliation for this family, for me and my husband.

Now she finally has a life of her own. I hope her future will be smooth, peaceful and filled with some real joy.

My mother-in-law’s choice was hard to accept, but also understandable. Because everyone has their own way of life, their own dreams and aspirations.
