More than 3,000 flights on domestic routes in Vietnam for the Lunar New Year 2025 have just been added by Vietnam Airlines , not to mention other airlines also have plans to increase capacity, so the supply is abundant. Will the airfares for the Lunar New Year of At Ty cool down?
Although domestic airlines opened ticket sales for Tet quite early, around mid-September, a survey by PV. VietNamNet shows that ticket prices for Tet 2025 still increased sharply, especially for hot routes from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and central localities such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Dong Hoi, Quy Nhon, Da Nang,...
Specifically, recorded on November 22, the price of Tet flight tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi on January 24, 2025 (December 25) and the opposite direction on February 2, 2025 (the 5th day of Tet) was up to more than 7.44 million VND/round-trip ticket (including taxes and fees) flying Vietjet Air or Vietravel Airlines, while Bamboo Airways and Vietnam Airlines were slightly higher, about 7.58 million VND.
Thus, compared to normal ticket prices, Tet At Ty airfare is twice as high; and compared to Lunar New Year 2024, this year's price is 800,000-1.4 million VND/ticket higher.
Similarly, flights from Ho Chi Minh City to other localities are also expensive, averaging 6-7 million VND/round trip ticket. For example, the flight ticket price for the Ho Chi Minh City - Thanh Hoa/Nghe An route during Tet is 7.4 million VND/round trip ticket; passengers flying to Da Nang have to pay about 5 million VND/round trip ticket...
According to a survey, some flights on Vietjet Air's ticketing system have sold out of Tet tickets, such as the Ho Chi Minh City - Dong Hoi route "sold out" from January 22-26, 2025 (ie from December 23-27); Ho Chi Minh City - Quy Nhon sold out from January 24-26, 2025,... Most of these routes are operated by airlines with few flights so the number of tickets is running out quickly.
On Vietnam Airlines' ticketing system, the sky-high prices for the HCMC - Dong Hoi route and vice versa, or the HCMC - Quy Nhon route... the Tet flight ticket prices are displayed at more than 10 million VND/round trip ticket (transit flight).
With the above price, a family of four like Ms. Mai Thu Hong (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) who wants to go to Hanoi to celebrate Tet must spend an average of 25 million VND just for airfare.
"My parents live in Ha Dong, Hanoi. They only have a long Tet holiday to visit each year, but the ticket price has already consumed almost all of our monthly salary. This year, the Tet flight ticket price is even more expensive than last year. So we have to stay and send money to our grandparents, and wait until summer for the children to come visit," Hong shared.
To meet the increased travel demand during the Lunar New Year 2025, Vietnam Airlines Group has just announced that it will provide more than 650,000 additional seats, equivalent to more than 3,000 flights on domestic routes in Vietnam during the period from January 13 to February 12, 2025 (ie from December 15 to January 15).
Thereby, increasing the total number of seats on Vietnam Airlines Group's domestic flight network to more than 2.15 million seats, equivalent to more than 11,000 flights.
According to airlines, many flights for the Lunar New Year 2025 currently have a seat occupancy rate of up to 70-80%, focusing on flights from Ho Chi Minh City to northern and central provinces such as Thanh Hoa, Quy Nhon, Chu Lai, Dong Hoi... The number of passengers is forecast to continue to increase sharply next month.
Previously, from mid-September 2024, domestic airlines began selling Tet tickets. Vietnam Airlines Group sold nearly 1.5 million seats on its domestic flight network for Tet. Vietjet opened early sales of 2.6 million Tet tickets. Vietravel Airlines and Bamboo Airways also provided hundreds of thousands of Tet flight tickets.
To serve the Tet peak, domestic airlines are planning to lease more aircraft. Specifically, Vietnam Airlines plans to lease 4 more Airbus A320/A321 aircraft, including 2 wet lease aircraft (including flight crew); each aircraft is expected to operate 180 flights during this occasion.
Private airline Vietjet Air is expected to receive 8 A321 aircraft and 2 E190 aircraft. Previously, on November 5, Bamboo Airways also received 1 more aircraft.
