Teachers dance enthusiastically, students are excited

Teachers at Thai Phien High School, Hai Phong caused a stir when they dressed up as funny old men and danced vibrant dances at the closing ceremony.

The year-end ceremony of Thai Phien High School, Hai Phong, on May 24 had a surprise at the end of the program. 16 people wearing hats, shorts, vests, sunglasses and fake beards covered their faces and walked on stage. When the background music of the song "Only Me" started, the dancers turned to face the audience and started dancing to the unanimous "oh" of the students.

"We were so surprised, we didn't think it was our teacher. Everyone was excited and took out their phones to record a video because they couldn't miss this moment," said Ngo Xuan Nhy, class 10A6.

The female student said that at first she thought it was a performance by her 10th and 11th graders and did not know that the teachers would perform.

"While filming the video, everyone was smiling and asking each other if it was Mr. Tinh or Ms. Phuong," Nhy said, adding that it was the first time he had witnessed teachers "playing big" like that.

Pham Doan Khanh Linh, class 10A7, was impressed by the teachers wearing youthful costumes and performing humorous movements.

"Witnessing another side of our teachers makes us extremely excited," Linh shared, admitting that the school wanted to surprise the students so they did not include the performance in the program plan.

A video recording the dance performance of teachers at Thai Phien school posted on a fanpage attracted 13,000 likes, more than 1,000 comments and over 560 shares after three days.

"That day, everyone was nervous, but I encouraged the teachers to rest assured, just go up and dance to the music and the students below will love it. The important thing is to have a meaningful performance as the goal set," said Mr. Le Thanh Tinh, Vice Principal of Thai Phien High School.

After a few awkward seconds, the teachers began to move with the melody.

"During practice, I couldn't jump like that, but when I heard the music and the students cheering below, I jumped up and down, adding a few more moves for beauty," Mr. Tinh said happily.

The dance, which lasted about 6 minutes, involved 16 teachers, including female teachers in their 60s. Mr. Tinh was the only male dancer in the group. After the performance, students rushed up to cheer their teachers and take souvenir photos.

According to Mr. Tinh, the performance was a gift for the students after a year of heavy study pressure. For 10th and 11th graders, this gift helps them relieve stress and welcome a vibrant summer, and for 12th graders, this is a word of encouragement before the upcoming high school graduation exam.

This is also in response to the movement of Building Happy Schools. The vice principal said that if teachers want to have changes in their profession, they must first dare to change themselves.

"Teachers have completely changed their style of walking, daring to express and assert themselves. That is also a way to educate students about confidence and daring to take challenges," Mr. Tinh shared.

Mr. Tinh said the school has a club for teachers to practice every week, both to improve their health, relieve work pressure and bond with colleagues.

"Before, the club had a dance about old ladies, so I suggested this one about old men. After much consideration in choosing costumes, we decided to appear with such a modern look," Mr. Tinh explained.

The dance was choreographed, coordinated, and led by another teacher over four sessions. The teachers practiced together before the performance. To attract students, the teachers chose a lively and popular music on TikTok.

"The teachers and I are very happy that the performance is supported. We also want to spread a positive spirit, helping the school's image stand out more," said Mr. Tinh, adding that he had watched it 100 times.

A few days ago, hearing her 12th grade daughter excitedly talk about the graduation ceremony, Ms. Duong Thi Thuy was not too concerned because she thought the program was the same as every year. When the video was shared, other parents sent it to her to watch and she was surprised.

"If I hadn't been told, I wouldn't have known it was a teacher. The dance was fun and humorous," said Ms. Thuy.

This parent said that she and many others were surprised because due to the nature of their profession, teachers are often associated with a serious image. In performances, they only sing and dance to familiar, light songs.

As a student of Thai Phien High School 20 years ago, Ms. Thuy believes that teachers are now more open, modern and understanding towards students. This, she says, is very positive, helping teachers understand students’ psychology.
