(HNMO) - On May 14, at Cat Linh station of the Cat Linh - Ha Dong urban railway, the National Traffic Safety Committee coordinated with the Hanoi Traffic Safety Committee to organize a launching ceremony in response to the 7th Global Road Traffic Safety Week.

The Global Road Safety Week was held from May 15 to 21 with many activities organized uniformly from the Central Government, ministries, branches, socio -political organizations to localities, to call on people to voluntarily comply with traffic safety laws, participate in green - clean - safe traffic by changing the habit of using personal motor vehicles to using bicycles, electric vehicles, public transport and walking; always comply with speed regulations when driving, give way to pedestrians and rudimentary vehicles.

In addition to propaganda, mobilization and legal education, the authorities have increased patrols, control and handling of violations of road traffic safety and order, especially violations of regulations on alcohol concentration, drugs, speed, etc.

In particular, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City will carry out a wide-ranging communication campaign on mass media channels, on the streets, at bus stations, wharves, and at driver training and testing centers...

At the launch, Ms. Angela Pratt, WHO Representative in Vietnam, assessed that with cooperation between many sectors, including transport, police, health and education, we can do much more to make the roads safer. WHO encourages further efforts in five priority areas: Child safety devices and seat belts; lower speed limits around schools; helmet regulations and helmet standards, especially for children; enforcement of policies against drinking and driving; and continued investment in improving the safety of road infrastructure.

According to Mr. Khuat Viet Hung, Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, besides the benefits of flexibility and convenience, participating in traffic by personal motor vehicles has a high risk of traffic accidents and is the cause of traffic congestion and environmental pollution, especially in urban areas.

The National Traffic Safety Committee coordinated with localities and relevant agencies and units to organize activities in response to the 7th Global Road Safety Week launched by the United Nations to call on all levels, sectors and the general public to renew their thinking about traffic, gradually shifting from traveling by personal motor vehicles to traveling by bicycles, electric vehicles, public transport, combined with walking to help make traffic greener, cleaner and especially increasingly safer.

Responding to the launching ceremony, General Director of Hanoi Metro Company Limited (Hanoi Metro) Vu Hong Truong said that urbanization is an objective trend of the development process. Along with the benefits that urbanization brings, there are challenges and pressure to solve problems facing urban transport such as: congestion, traffic accidents, environmental pollution, etc. Prioritizing the development of public passenger transport with the "backbone" being urban railways is always considered a fundamental solution to fundamentally solve the challenges facing urban transport. This is also a common global trend.
