Successful hip replacement for 3 elderly patients

Doctors in Can Tho have just successfully performed three hip replacement surgeries on three elderly patients, including a 104-year-old man.

On February 18, information from Can Tho Central General Hospital said that doctors at the hospital's Orthopedic Trauma Center had just performed consecutive successful hip replacement surgeries on 3 patients aged 93-104, to treat femoral neck fractures and femoral trochanteric intertrochanteric fractures.

Patients were admitted with femoral neck and intertrochanteric femoral fractures and complex underlying pathologies.

The first case is Mr. LVB (104 years old, in Can Tho) who was admitted to the hospital with left groin pain after falling while walking around the house. The patient was diagnosed with a fracture of the right femur, high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, mild collapse of the lower lobes of both lungs, and acute renal failure. After consultation, the doctors decided to perform partial left hip replacement surgery for the patient.

Similarly, Mr. LTT (93 years old, in Soc Trang ) was also diagnosed with a fracture of the left femur, high blood pressure, and senility. The third case is Mr. PTN, 99 years old, living in Dong Thap, who was transferred to Can Tho Central General Hospital by the front line in a state of right groin pain and limited mobility after a fall.

The results showed that patient N. had a complex fracture of the upper end of the right femur, with many associated internal medical conditions such as long-term treated hypertension, myocardial ischemia, chronic left superficial femoral artery occlusion, etc. After consultation, the patient underwent long-shaft partial right hip replacement.

Currently, after surgery, all 3 patients are awake, have stable vital signs, can sit, eat and walk with a support frame, and are expected to be discharged in the next few days.

Specialist Doctor Huynh Thong Em, Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Center, said that femoral neck fractures and femoral intertrochanteric fractures in patients over 80 years old are often difficult to heal. Therefore, joint replacement surgery is the solution to help patients quickly recover their mobility and avoid complications due to prolonged lying down and immobility.

According to Dr. Thong Em, in the past, hip replacement in the elderly was a challenge for surgeons and anesthetists because the elderly were often weak and had many comorbidities, especially cardiovascular disease. However, with current medical advances, if the patient's physical condition allows, along with adequate preparation, elderly patients can undergo a safe surgery; thereby significantly improving the quality of life and prolonging life.
