Vietnam Sports: Accelerating to the Olympics

Việt NamViệt Nam02/05/2024

By mid-February, only 30% of the minimum quota (4 places) was met, and 1 more place was added 30 days later, but by the end of April, Vietnamese sports had 10 athletes who met the standards to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This acceleration not only helped sports managers temporarily relieve the anxiety that had weighed down over the past months, but also made fans more confident that the achievements of Vietnamese sports would not stop there.

Looking at the Southeast Asian region, Vietnamese sports are still in a state of having to catch up with neighboring competitors when Thailand currently has 40 official places to the Olympics, Indonesia 21 places, Malaysia 18 places, Singapore 15 places and the Philippines 12 places... However, the fact that 10 athletes have won the right to go to Paris is really a very encouraging signal and the target of 12-15 places to participate in the 2024 Olympics is no longer something beyond imagination for Vietnamese sports.

In addition to the taekwondo, gymnastics, archery and judo teams that finished their qualifying campaigns without meeting their targets, eight of the 14 key investment sports - swimming, cycling, shooting, badminton, weightlifting, canoeing, rowing and boxing - all had members who met the Olympic standards.

In these 8 sports, boxing still hopes to gain more spots when top female boxers such as Nguyen Thi Tam, Ha Thi Linh and Luu Diem Quynh continue to compete in the second Olympic qualifying round taking place in Thailand from May 22 to June 2. The women's boxing team has just completed a 2-week training trip in Kazakhstan and will continue to Thailand for training in the coming days before officially competing in the land of golden pagodas.

In table tennis, hope rests on the shoulders of Dinh Anh Hoang, Nguyen Anh Tu, Mai Hoang My Trang and Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh, who will participate in the Southeast Asian Olympic qualifying round opening on May 5 in Bangkok (Thailand). This is the only chance for Vietnamese table tennis to compete for an official spot at the Paris Olympics.

Having just completed a training trip in Nanning (China), the Vietnamese table tennis team is determined to qualify for the Olympics. Only the two male and female champions of this qualifying round will have official tickets to France and the opportunity is opening up for 12 male players and 9 female players in the region.

This is an extremely difficult goal for Vietnamese tennis players when competing with them are top players such as Sanguansin Phakpoom (men's singles runner-up at SEA Games 31), Izaac Quek (men's singles gold medal at SEA Games 32), Ho Ting (women's singles bronze medal at SEA Games 31), Zeng Jian (women's singles gold medal at SEA Games 32)...

With an impressive achievement of winning silver medals in the women's 100m and 200m at the 2024 Asian Youth Athletics Championships, Tran Thi Nhi Yen is likely to be selected to participate in the women's 100m event at the Paris Olympics. According to the regulations, if Vietnam cannot win an official ticket, athletics will receive a special ticket in the women's 100m, women's 800m or marathon events.
