South Korean Prime Minister resigns

According to Yonhap news agency, on April 11, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo submitted his resignation during a cabinet meeting to take responsibility for the ruling People's Power Party's (PPP) defeat in the general election the day before.

PPP leader Han Dong-hoon also announced his resignation. South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said the government would cooperate more actively with the opposition-controlled National Assembly .

According to the National Election Commission (NEC), the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) won 161 of the 254 seats contested in the direct election, while the PPP won only 90 seats. Including the seats according to the party's proportional representation, the DP and its satellite parties won 176 seats, while the PPP and its satellite parties will only win 109 seats in the 300-member National Assembly. In this general election, the DP also won a big victory in the capital Seoul, winning 37 of the 48 seats allocated to Seoul.

The April 10 election is seen as a midterm vote of confidence for President Yoon Suk-yeol, who takes office in 2022 for a five-year term. Speaking after the election results were announced, President Yoon Suk-yeol said he would respect the will of the people, carry out reforms in state affairs, and do his best to stabilize the economy and people's livelihoods.
