On May 27, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said he was willing to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to seek a solution to the issue of Japanese citizens abducted in the 1960s and 1970s.

Prime Minister Kishida has pledged to build relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, to resolve the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.

Speaking at an event on the issue in Tokyo, Mr. Kishida said, “I am willing to meet Mr. Kim Jong-un directly without any conditions.” The Mainichi Shimbun, Nikkei and Japanese news agencies all carried this information.

In 2002, Pyongyang admitted to kidnapping 13 Japanese citizens decades ago. Five of them and their families have since returned to Japan, and the others have been reported dead. However, Tokyo believes 17 Japanese citizens are still being held and continues to investigate the fate of those who have not returned.

Meanwhile, North Korea has repeatedly asserted that the issue of Japanese citizens abducted in the past "has already been resolved."
